  1. Lymphatic Drainage Massage Lymphatic massage, also known as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), is a gentle type of massage that may help relieve swelling and promote a healthy immune system. Although evidence supporting its benefits is limited, some people with lymphedema find it helps reduce the severity of their symptoms. A therapist uses light rhythmic gliding, compressing and stretching movements to gently stimulate the lymph vessels that sit right below the skin. The lymphatic system is like your body’s cleaning service, containing lymph vessels and nodes that facilitate the flow of fluid through the tissues and lymph nodes. It removes waste products from the tissues and directs them to organs that flush the waste from the body. When the lymphatic system doesn’t work properly, fluid builds up in tissues and waste accumulates, causing a range of problems from chronic venous insufficiency to fibromyalgia. Some conditions that can benefit from lymphatic drainage massage include rheumatoid arthritis, chronic venous insufficiency and lipedema, which is caused by excess fat accumulation in the legs. It’s important to talk to your doctor before receiving this type of massage. They can determine if it’s safe for you and advise you on the best technique for you. There are several different types of lymphatic drainage massage. A therapist may use different techniques depending on their training. The therapist’s goal is to release blockages of the lymph vessels and nodes, promoting a healthier immune system. Lymphatic drainage massage can be performed on the whole body or on specific areas that have swelling. Since the lymph vessels and nodes are very superficial, a person shouldn’t feel pain during a lymphatic drainage massage. If you’re interested in trying a lymphatic drainage massage, it’s a good idea to have it in Recovery Therapy Orlando who specializes in this treatment. To do a lymphatic drainage massage, lie down and make yourself as comfortable as possible. Start at the furthest point from your affected area and massage slowly in a circular motion. Avoid massaging directly on the swollen area, as this can increase swelling and irritate the tissue. Instead, focus on massaging areas without swelling to make space for lymph to move to those areas from more congested parts of the body. Using your flat palm and fingertips, massage the skin with slow, gentle movements. Be sure to only use gentle pressure so you don’t hurt yourself. If you do experience any pain, contact a therapist immediately.
