  3. Deadly Effects of Covetousness • Coveted something not his own • Achan stole from God • Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11) • Remember Malachi’s question? • Will a man rob God? (3:8-12) • God blesses us (James 1:17) • Return some (1 Corinthians 16:1, 2)

  4. Deadly Effects of Covetousness • Could we be like Achan? • Are we robbing God? • Do we return what we should?

  5. God Knows All • Achan tried to hide his sin • Adam and Eve (Genesis 3:1-11) • Cain’s murder (Genesis 4:9, 10) • David’s sin (2 Samuel 12-14)

  6. God Knows All • God sees everything • Lives are open (Hebrews 4:13) • Cannot fool God (Acts 5:4) • Sin cannot be hidden (Ecclesiastes 12:14) • Revealed at judgment (2 Corinthians 5:10)

  7. God Knows All • Do we try to cover up sin? • Results in misery • Sin cannot be hidden • Must be confessed (Psalm 32)

  8. Effect of Sin in The Camp • Victory turned to defeat (Joshua 7) • God was angered (v. 1) • Should have been a simple task (v. 3) • Their hearts melted and thirty six died (v. 5)

  9. Effect of Sin in The Camp • Sin must be removed • God’s people must be holy (Romans 12:2; Titus 2:11-14) • Sin is a reproach (1 Corinthians 5:4-7, 13) • Cannot be approved as long as sin is tolerated (Joshua 7:13; 2 Corinthians 2:9)

  10. Effect of Sin in The Camp • Is there sin in the camp? • Some of it may be known only to God (1 Timothy 5:24) • Hinders our efforts to teach the lost

  11. Prayer and Action Are Necessary • Prayer alone will not suffice • Prayer is important (James 5:16) • Pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17) • Prayer alone does not save (Acts 8:21, 22)

  12. Prayer and Action Are Necessary • Joshua prayed • Concerned about God’s name • He was told to quit praying and take action (Joshua 7:10-13) • Had to put away the wicked one

  13. Prayer and Action Are Necessary • We must learn this lesson • Pray for one another often • However, action is necessary at times (1 Corinthians 5:9)

  14. Conclusion • The place of Achan’s death was Achor, meaning trouble • Are you in the Valley of Achor? (Joshua 7:26)
