  2. Problem 1 Lake Erie’s deepest point is -64 meters. Lake Superior’s deepest point is -406 meters. What is the difference between deepest part of the two lakes? ANSWER: 406 – 64 = 342 m The difference between the deepest parts of the two lakes is 342 meters.

  3. Problem 2 Most people lose 100 to 200 hairs per day. If you were to lose 150 hairs per day for 10 days what would be the change in the number of hairs you have? ANSWER: -150(10) = -1,500 You would lose 1,500 hairs in 10 days.

  4. Problem 3 For every 1 kilometer increase in altitude, the temperature drops 7°C. Find the temperature change for a 5 kilometer altitude increase. ANSWER: First kilometer: -7 Second kilometer: -7 Third kilometer: -7 Fourth kilometer: -7 Fifth kilometer: -7 -7(5) = -35°C The temperature will decrease 35 degrees.

  5. Problem 4 A scuba diver dives 125 feet into the water. She then rises 46 feet in the water. What is her position in the water? ANSWER: -125 feet below the surface of the water Rises 46 means to add -125 + 46 = -79 Her position in the water is -79 feet. OR She is 79 feet below the surface of the water.

  6. Problem 5 The table below shows Mr. Carson’s weight change during the first 3 months of his diet. If he started his diet at 245 pounds, how much did he weigh at the end of month 3? ANSWER: 245 – 7 = 238 238 – 9 = 229 229 – 5 = 224 Mr. Carson weighed 224 pounds at the end of month 3.
