  2. What are the big comparability issues? Ideally, assessment of differences (across countries, over time) But assessment must be in terms of output (tables, regression results) Second best: make the users aware of differences in - Definitions and concepts - Classifications

  3. Family and household studies Complex field Distinguish • Family vs household (cf. Annex 2) 2. Analysis at two levels (cf. Annex 2) (i) Individual (ii) Group

  4. Lacking definitions Most important ones: • Child • Cohabiting couple (consensual union) • Reconstituted family/ Step family May have large consequences e.g. age limit or marital status for children

  5. Household definitions Dwelling unit vs housekeeping unit Differences for total number of households are small But large differences for specific household types, e.g. one-person households

  6. Reference person/household head Large variety But in practice, for couples, most often the man

  7. Update classifications, definitions, concepts, and make them available to users
