  2. The SEO industry has grown and changed A N Y T H I N G S E O Through the years, the SEO industry has grown and changed. Marketers adapted their strategies accordingly to catch up. Unethical black hat techniques adapted as well. People remained vigilant (and will continue to be) in observing and managing such attacks. Online marketers should have knowledge and awareness of the different kinds of Negative SEO attacks. Recently, Hartzer discovered a “new undetectable negative SEO tactic”. Fortunately, people were quick to point out that it does not work. Knowledge and awareness on these matters can help you protect yourself from becoming a victim. This article aims to define what negative SEO is and to enumerate its different types.

  3. What is negative SEO? As I have said in a recent post, Moz defined negative SEO as an “attempt to lower a site’s rankings in the search engines”. These activities can be off-page or on-page. It can manipulate search engines to penalise or ban the victim’s site.

  4. There are six basic types of negative SEO you should watch out for according to Search Engine Land: link farms, scraping, forceful crawling, content modification, site de-indexing, and site hacking. They belong to two categories: off-page and on-page. What are its different types?

  5. Negative Off-page This kind can affect the site without internal interference. 01 02 03 Link farms -involves building spammy interconnected links that use the same anchor text SEO Scrapping -involves content duplication across multiples sites Forceful crawling -involves forcefully crawling the site to cause heavy server load

  6. Negative On-page This kind can affect the site without internal interference. 01 02 03 Content modification -involves changing your content, adding spammy content or redirecting links SEO Site de-indexing – involves a small change in robots.txt like adding disallow rule Site hacking -involves hacking a site so it will get de-rank

  7. Conclusion Negative SEO can be considered a form of libel or false representation. Some create fake social profiles and reviews to ruin a competitor’s online reputation. Do not let your SEO efforts go to waste. It is difficult to deal with this problem once it happened. Prevention is much easier. Protect your hard earned site rank from unethical black hat SEO attacks. I will write another article to further elaborate on negative SEO protection.
