  1. oogle+ is Coming Down to a Close After Data Breach

  2. Google created a massive innovation in the past few years since it took its run. They rolled out Google+ in 2011 to challenge Facebook. Although it didn’t make that much of an impact, it influenced some search results.

  3. Data security breach, what? According to reports on the morning of October 8, there were hundreds of thousands of users whose data was exposed to third-party developers last March. Google, however, chose not to disclose the data breach for fear of drawing “regulatory scrutiny and cause reputational damage” as per the reports from WSJ. Google explained that this breach was a result of an API bug. Based on the analysis, it showed that 438 applications might have used this API (Marketing Land, 2018), potentially affecting 500,000 Google+ accounts’ profile. But Google says there’s no evidence of misuse of any profile data. The breached data includes names, emails, demographic information and other profile data.

  4. Google+ went through a series of changes and updates in its seven-year existence. However, it never evolved as much as its social network rivals, Facebook, Instagram or even Pinterest. So it was Monday that Google+ cleared out its decision to close down, adding detail that its consumer version has low usage and user engagement. They confirmed that in August 2019, Google+ would be on its final closure from a 10-month transition. Google stated that they would provide users with additional information on ways to download their data for migration, should they feel the need to do.

  5. Most marketers don’t rely on Google+, so its closure will not create a significant impact, not even on SEO. But this issue is seen in a broader context about what’s exactly going on between data privacy and security. It’s good to hear that both Google and Apple share the same sentiments by giving their users more data control and limit on what information, third-party developers, can access. Google confirmed this by saying that they will strengthen their security and consumer control over data shared with developers. But that’s what they should be doing. This incident is more likely to fuel further privacy and security debates, which may probably result in new policies and security laws that will take action against data disclosures such as this and also as precautionary measures for prevention.
