  1. Our Covenant-keeping God God remembers his covenant forever, the word he commanded for a thousand generations, the covenant he made with Abraham Psalm 105:8

  2. ‘Billy Graham! Millions of people here want to thank you.’ Our focus this morning is on Psalm 105 It is a testimony and witness and thanksgiving to the goodness of the Lord

  3. 1 Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name;    make known among the nations what he has done.2 Sing to him, sing praise to him;    tell of all his wonderful acts.3 Glory in his holy name;    let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice.4 Look to the Lord and his strength;    seek his face always. • 5 Remember the wonders he has done,    his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced,6 you his servants, the descendants of Abraham,    his chosen ones, the children of Jacob.7 He is the Lord our God;    his judgments are in all the earth.

  4. 8 He remembers his covenant forever,    the promise he made, for a thousand generations,9 the covenant he made with Abraham,    the oath he swore to Isaac.10 He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree,    to Israel as an everlasting covenant:11 “To you I will give the land of Canaan    as the portion you will inherit.” • 12 When they were but few in number,    few indeed, and strangers in it,13 they wandered from nation to nation,    from one kingdom to another.14 He allowed no one to oppress them;    for their sake he rebuked kings:15 “Do not touch my anointed ones;    do my prophets no harm.”

  5. ‘Heremembers his covenant forever, the word he commanded, for a thousand generations, the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac. He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant.’

  6. To make a Covenant is a means by which a binding relationship can be established. It is a serious decision and is binding for life. It can be made between two people or groups. In the ancient world it was made by a Sovereign and those he had conquered in war: explaining what he expects of them and the safety he assures the vassal. • Abraham knew what a covenant was: immutable, unalterable, indestructible, dependable, persistent, everlasting, unshakeable, ineradicable, irreversible, uncompromising

  7. God’s Covenant Promise to Abraham ‘Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. ‘I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you … to your offspring I will give this land.’ Genesis 12:1- 3, 7. Revolutionary

  8. We see God’s promise to Abraham fulfilled in: Abraham, claimed to hear an unknown voice, left his country without credentials, deserted his family, promised a land he never received, assured of many descendants with a barren wife, promised he would be the father of many nations hence his name, Abraham: the father of many nations. Challenges: • Promised descendants but wife barren? Mistakes!!!! An only son of promise is born: Isaac. Faith • Only promised Son to be sacrificed for God? Ram provided instead, only son lives. Result: His obedience qualified him to be father of the righteous: Jew and Gentile, Israel and the Church.

  9. 16He called down famine on the land    and destroyed all their supplies of food;17 and he sent a man before them—    Joseph, sold as a slave.18 They bruised his feet with shackles,    his neck was put in irons,19 till what he foretold came to pass,    till the word of the Lord proved him true.20 The king sent and released him,    the ruler of peoples set him free.21 He made him master of his household,    ruler over all he possessed,22 to instruct his princes as he pleased    and teach his elders wisdom.

  10. We see God’s promise to Abraham filled in: • Joseph, immature dreamer, paternal favourite, siblings maliciously sold him to slave traders, imprisoned for serious rape charge. • He was elevated to the second most powerful man in the greatest ancient empire, Egypt, his skills and wisdom were a blessing by means of ‘salvation’ to the entire world saved from starvation, saved his family securing them a prosperous life. • Joseph was a fulfilment of the Abrahamic Covenant. • Famine brought Jacob’s sons to Egypt for food, his entire family followed. • Joseph revealed himself frightening his brothers: revenge? Guilt? • He explained God wanted this, they were ready to hear from God. • Privilege to slavery; liberty to prison. • The Pharaoh who knew not Joseph. Slavery

  11. 23 Then Israel entered Egypt;23Then Israel entered Egypt: Jacob resided as a foreigner in the land of Ham.24 The Lord made his people very fruitful;    he made them too numerous for their foes,25 whose hearts he turned to hate his people,    to conspire against his servants.26 He sent Moses his servant,    and Aaron, whom he had chosen.27 They performed his signs among them,    his wonders in the land of Ham.28 He sent darkness and made the land dark—    for had they not rebelled against his words?29 He turned their waters into blood,    causing their fish to die.30 Their land teemed with frogs,    which went up into the bedrooms of their rulers.

  12. 31 He spoke, and there came swarms of flies,    and gnats throughout their country.32 He turned their rain into hail,    with lightning throughout their land;33 he struck down their vines and fig trees    and shattered the trees of their country.34 He spoke, and the locusts came,    grasshoppers without number;35 they ate up every green thing in their land,    ate up the produce of their soil.36 Then he struck down all the firstborn in their land,    the first fruits of all their manhood.37 He brought out Israel, laden with silver and gold,    and from among their tribes no one faltered.38 Egypt was glad when they left,    because dread of Israel had fallen on them.

  13. 39 He spread out a cloud as a covering,    and a fire to give light at night.40 They asked, and he brought them quail;    he fed them well with the bread of heaven.41 He opened the rock, and water gushed out;    it flowed like a river in the desert. • 42 For he remembered his holy promise    given to his servant Abraham.43 He brought out his people with rejoicing,    his chosen ones with shouts of joy;44 he gave them the lands of the nations,    and they fell heir to what others had toiled for—45 that they might keep his precepts    and observe his laws. • Praise the Lord.

  14. We see God’s promises to Abraham fulfilled in: • Moses, a stutterer, little self-confidence, leading a bunch of untamed slaves, chased by the world’s best army, blocked by sea opening it by waving a rod, who disappears up a cloud-covered mountain … twice … for 40 days each, all trying to create a nation. • Moses, witnessed major destruction of the world empire, to establish a nation with a unique constitution spoken by God and heard by the entire population! • Moses, recognised as the greatest Lawmaker history has ever known that has influenced the national legal systems of many nations. • Created a nation in antiquity, subsequently driven out of its God-given land, scattered across the globe, and has returned to establish a creative innovative nation speaking its ancient language. • Moses prophesied one greater than he would appear in the future to lead this chosen nation: Jesus! Unique

  15. In Covenant with Jesus God’s justice requires a perfect sacrifice for man’s sin: sin leads to death. Jesus the perfect man died, his blood shed in making covenant for man. That covenant offer is open to everybody: accept it or reject it. When we come to Jesus’ Cross accepting His generous offer We must confess our sinfulness, repent, ask His forgiveness. A transfer takes place at the Cross: Jesus takes our death sentence and gives us His life, eternal life. We then walk in the assurance of that LIFE.

  16. Prayer to be what You, Jesus, want Me to be. Thank you Jesus that you died for me personally, to deliver me from the burden of unbelief in what I can achieve and be ..….. ….. pause to consider). This morning will You give me faith to believe that You have faith in me. Would you give me confidence to use the gifts You have given me. Would You also give me the revelation that I am in covenant-relationship with You, that I can call upon You for the wisdom, strength and the perseverance to attain the goals you have allocated for me. In Jesus Name. Amen

  17. Priestly Blessing The Lord bless you and keep you; The Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; The Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace. Numbers 6:24-26
