  2. The reliability of a web hosting service is generally determined by the amount of downtime experienced. In other words, over the course of a year, how often will your site be unavailable due to web hosting problems. The length of time a system has been online for is not a reliable indicator. Remember, many internet based businesses rely on a permanent internet connection. In this sort of scenario, one could use one's computer as a website host. After all, this is a cheap option, but the obvious downside is that cheap or free options are always limited, and all of them lack many of the features you could expect from a paid web hosting service.

As has been said however, paid hosting services are not free because they provide far more features, many of which are vital to businesses. These days it's more important than ever before to fully understand what your exact requirements are before making a decision. At present, Linux-based hosting is the most common type, but customers do of course have other options as well, including PHP and Perl.
