  1. Using CAQDAS and Google Earth to analyse qualitative data in the context of place Graham Hughes NCRM QUIC Node - University of Surrey Research Methods Festival - 6th July 2010 n.hughes@surrey.ac.uk

  2. Software used in this session • MAXqda (v2010) • NVivo (v8) • ATLAS.ti (v6) • Google Earth

  3. A traditional map

  4. A Google Earth Image

  5. Google Earth control panel

  6. Save a “place” in GE

  7. Creating a geolink in MAXqda

  8. How a geolink shows in MAXqda

  9. Working with GE and MAXqda

  10. MAXqda coding and audio

  11. Creating a geolink in Nvivo (1)

  12. Creating a geolink in Nvivo (2)

  13. Creating a geolink in Nvivo (3)

  14. How the link appears in Nvivo (1)

  15. How the link appears in Nvivo (2)

  16. ATLAS.ti has a different approach

  17. Google Earth is embedded within ATLAS project

  18. Make a quotation (not a link)

  19. A Google Earth PD is a set of places

  20. Save a GE ‘Snapshot’ view

  21. Text quotes can be linked to GE quotes

  22. Now GE opens in a new window

  23. With a network create a “virtual crowd”

  24. In conclusion • MAXqda is quite easy, but has only basic functionality for GE and audio links • Nvivo users should hope for an improvement with v9. It does provide linking facilities but they are ‘clunky’ • ATLAS.ti tries hard to integrate the programs, and offers the greatest flexibility for imaginative users
