  2. Overview • 12S work part of Lothian Mental Health and Wellbeing Programme • Sense of Belonging Strategy 2011- 2016 “Giving connects two people, the giver and the receiver, and this connection gives birth to a new sense of belonging”. Deepak Chopra

  3. What is 12S…. • Pilot project from 2008- 2011; mainstream 2011+ • 12S= 12 Settings- 6 colleges, 6 universities • Initially, a partnership between Charlie Waller Memorial Trust and NHS Lothian and Mental Health Foundation • Became part of new Mental Health and Wellbeing Strategy- Sense of Belonging, 2011

Project Aims • Raise awareness of mental health and well being within college/ university settings • Increase partnership working and understanding • Develop expertise to deliver and facilitate training and education • Extend and develop networks within and across agency boundaries • Share learning within and beyond Lothian

  5. Project Overview Three key areas • Mental health promotion- for students and staff, population approach • Mental health inequalities -looking at specific needs within key population groups • Partnership development- cross sector communication, understanding and working

  6. Small Grant Schemes • Built on the learning and outcomes from the 12S Pilot • Focused on: • highlighting wellbeing • building partnerships • developing networks • training and capacity building • settings approach • senior buy-in

  7. Having a Well-Being Focus • Is a challenge for organisations • Shapes the way discourse and development happens • Brings diverse range of staff/ interested people into the work • Does not stand as a focus on its own • Means new connections are made

  8. What Next? • Work continuing- groups, training, events, planning, creating • Links to other agencies- national, local, third sector • Today is also about posing a question- how to keep a well-being focus and culture within pressured settings?
