  1. ARAB LEAGUE

  2. EXECUTIVE BOARD • CHAIR – SUMER GILL • DIRECTOR – SHIVAM BAKSHI • RAPPORTEUR – SHREYA SAHAY

  3. THE ARAB LEAGUE • The Arab League was founded in 1945 at Cairo, Egypt with 7 members. • It had been set up with the aims of unifying the Arabic Countries, freeing those Arabic countries under colonial rule and preventing a Jewish state from forming in Palestine. • It comprises of 21 members from the Middle East and North Africa andconsists of one suspendedstate, Syria.

  4. It is involved in political, economic, cultural and social programs designed to promote the interests of member states. • The Arab League is a regional body that dominates affairs in the Middle East and North Africa. It has played a vital role in the volatile region since its formation. • Some important issues the League still faces is political and economic stability amongst its members, The Arab – Israel conflict, Terrorism and the Arab Spring amongst others.

  5. MEMBERNATIONS • There are 21 Members, spread across North Africa and the Middle East. • Syria is a suspended member. • Palestine is recognized as a separate country. • At AMUN’ 13 we will simulate 13 observer nations as well.

  6. THE ARAB SPRING

  7. A revolutionary wave that began in December 2010 in Tunisia against Ben Ali’s dictatorial regime and later passed to a majority of the Middle East, the Arab Spring refers to a democratic uprising of Arab Nations. • While the idea of a shift towards democracy does sound advantageous, it brings along its ill effects. Prevalent issues include human rights violation, inflation, riots and civil war.

  8. The rebellion has been successful in Tunisia, Egypt and with the intervention by NATO even in Libya. • However, the revolution that began in Syria in March 2011, is the bloodiest and worst of them all. The country has slipped into a state of civil war and the daily death toll rises to more than 400. • As a result it becomes the duty of the Arab League to maintain peace and security in Syria and across the Middle East.

  9. THE ARAB LEAGUE AT AMUN 2013 • It is a regional committee, the first of its kind to ever be simulated at AMUN. • The committee will have 22 member nations and 13 observers bringing the total to 35 countries. • The committee will be the only double delegation committee.
