  3. Political Parties In Canada (Federal) • Liberals = Bob Rae • Conservatives= Stephen Harper • New Democratic Party (NDP)= Nycole Turmel • Bloc Quebecois= vacant

  4. Canadian Political Spectrum Left, Centre, Right

  5. Left Wing -Support change ( radical at times) -govt should provide more social services -support higher taxes -believe that govt should be heavily involved in economy -believe that criminals should be rehabilitated -support new solutions to old problems

  6. Center • Believe both in tradition and change • Govt should play a role only when it improves lives of citizens • Rights of individuals should be protected • Apply some new and old solutions to issues facing the country

Right • Support tradition and status quo (existing situation) • Govt limited role in economy • Cut govt spending • Support business and free enterprise ( no high taxes) • Budget should be balanced • Law and order priority • Criminals need to be punished severely • Turn back the clock when problem solving

  9. The Electoral System: First Past the Post System • Candidate with the most votes in each riding is winner = first past the post system • Winner does not necessarily have to win a majority of the total votes- he/she simply has to win more votes than any other candidate

Controversy over Election ProcessProportional Representation • Some ppl arguing for switch in election process • Prop Rep used in Holland, Italy • Each party puts forward a list of candidates • Voters support a candidate on basis of party • Number of seats a party wins is based on the total number of votes it receives • See page 253 for example

  12. Election Process • 1)The Call • G.G on request by PM calls for election. Close to its end of 5 yr term. • 2) The Nominations • Candidates usually selected by local party members submit nominations to go onto ballot • 3) Voter’s List • Chief electoral officer prepares voters list in every province.   13. Mini-Project:Political Party Brochure • Design a political party brochure according to your number. Your goal is to attract more party support. In your brochure, you must include the following: • History of Party • Current Leader of Party • Position on political spectrum • Party beliefs and goals • Party platform (promises for all CDNS) • Please note additional research must be done. Please bring in materials next class as you will have time to work on your brochures. • Project Breakdown • Information /15 • Creativity /10 • Overall appeal /15 • TOTAL /40
