  1. Convective Weather/TMADemonstration Nov 08 Daytona Beach NextGen Test Facility Jim Rogers, Project Lead Advanced Technology Development and Prototyping Group (AJP-67) April 23, 2008

  2. Background • “Integrated Airport” established 2003 by Embry Riddle (ERAU) with Lockheed Martin and three other companies • Consortium grown to 12 partners focusing on integrated demonstration activity (surface, departure, en route and arrival domains) • Efforts to date funded through industry research and development (IR&D) • Lab facility at the DAB international terminal building • Nov 07 demo of consortium concept of an Airport Wide Information Management (AWIM) system – industry prototyping of Terminal Data Distribution System (TDDS) capability envisioned in NAS architecture • FAA FY-08 budget is $1.96M for the “Next Generation Integrated Airport” at Daytona Beach • Working to conclude Other Transaction Agreement (OTA) with ERAU April/May • Expanding project as a key element of evolving regional test bed centered state of Florida

  4. FY08 Project Objectives • Operational analysis and ConOps development of arrival management improvements • Evaluate SWIM-enabled ConOps and controller user interface concepts for ERAM-based re-planning around convective weather for flights en route to meter fix • Convective weather product definition • Integrate NextGen functional improvements in Daytona Test bed to evaluate arrival concept transition steps (Candidate List) • Integrate Orlando TMA for Daytona Test bed • Convective Weather Service deployment • TMA subscription to SWIM Convective Weather for display on the TMA Display. • TMA publishing of Metering Information • TMA assesses updated flight and trajectory data to update metering sequence/adjustments. • ERAM subscription to TMA Metering Information Service and display on D-Position • ERAM subscription to Convective Weather for display on D-Position • ERAM Trajectory planning modified to identify convective weather conflicts • ERAM D-Position CHI modified to display Convective Weather and Trajectory conflicts with Convective Weather • Re-planning tools automatically update SWIM-based flight plan and trajectory

  5. Convective Weather Impacts on TMA • Convective weather can cause TMA strategic reroute to meter fix. • Convective weather can cause TMA strategic reroute to a different meter fix. • Convective weather can cause Tactical Controller vectoring of aircraft around convective weather
