  1. 4 Things To Do If You Are Planning To Learn Rock Climbing There’s more to rock climbing than experiencing the thrill of hanging hundreds of feet above the ground while attached to a rope. The sport is known to help fight depression and make the mind more agile. If you’re planning to take up rock climbing, here are a few things to know: Join a Climbing Gym: Before you conquer the Alps or the mighty Yosemite, join a climbing gym to practice climbing on artificial walls with handholds and footholds placed strategically at different places along the wall. The different routes are color-coded according to difficulty levels. As a beginner, you may be taught bouldering – a practice that does not use rope or harness but uses crash pads that are designed to protect climbers when they fall. Sometimes, you could be taught top roping – a technique where climbers are tied to an anchored rope. Get the Right Gear: While most gyms provide the necessary gear, if you are planning to take things to the next level, you will have to buy a few things. If you’re taking up outdoor climbing, buy a full set of professional climbing gear. Some of the basic items include climbing cloth, shoes, helmets, harness, carabiners, climbing ropes, belay devices, and accessories like cord locks, buckles, etc. Of all this equipment, the ropeis undoubtedly the most important of all – pick one that passes UIAA tests and has a reputation within the market for quality and durability. Prepare Yourself Mentally: Rock climbing isn’t the safest of sports, but it isn’t as risky as you would imagine. It is all about mitigating risk factors and preparing the mind to stay calm. In fact, there’s no better way to conquer your fear of heights than to take up rock climbing. Learn the Lingo: Communication is very important when climbing to avoid accidents and reduce stress. You will be taught a few words popularly used by climbers. For example, before climbing, the lead climber will always ask, “On belay?” Belaying refers to a technique where climbers control tension on the other end of the rope while their partners ascend. Rock climbing is the perfect adventure sport to train the mind and body simultaneously. It also helps you connect with nature. It can be intimidating in the beginning, but with the right equipment and help from the right professionals, it can become quite the addiction!

  2. Resource Box: The Author loves outdoor sports and encourages others to learn new activities. He also helps them find the right sporting gear like twisted ropes, plastic hardware, andrelated accessories.
