  2.  Extension: Can you think of 3 examples of how slavery continues today? When did slavery end?  Learning objectives To identify the ways in which William Wilberforce helped to end slavery To examine different interpretations on the abolition of slavery

  3.  Your task • Read the article from the BBC History website about the abolitionist, William Wilberforce. Highlight in green any evidence you find which explains why he was so successful in campaigning against slavery. • Give 3 reasons, based on your knowledge & the article, why you think it took so long to pass a law ending slavery • Extension: what evidence could you use to show Wilberforce’s weaknesses as a campaigner?

  4.  Your task • Your teacher will give you a role card. Do the following: • Decide if you would have been a supporter of slavery or an abolitionist • In a debate on abolition, what points would you make to defend your position? • What points would you make to attack your opponents?

  5.  Extension task • Watch the film Amazing Grace. How true is it to the life of Wilberforce you have read? Write down 5 examples where you think the film may exaggerate the truth for dramatic effect.

  6.  Homework • Write a paragraph explaining your position on the slave trade to present to the class in a slave trade debate next lesson.

  7.  Plenary • What was the most effective way of campaigning against slavery? • List 3 ways in which Wilberforce actively helped in bringing an end to slavery • What goes into an effective speech? • Extension: Why did Wilberforce only succeed in passing a law to end slavery at the end of his life?
