  1. IKTA5-101/2002 POPULAR TRADITIONS IN THE CARPATHIAN BASIN • Participants: • Offers Hungary Ltd. • MTA Ethnography Research Institute

  2. Introduction of participants • MTA Ethnography Research Institute: The Institute is one of the most important research place of Hungarian ethnography research, that examines several fields of European and general ethnology, social- and cultural anthropology. Researchers are focused on the cultural inheritance of Hungarian people and their central -European neighborhood. • Offers Hungary Ltd: Offers Hungary Ltd. performs informatical and research activity related to Internet and network applications since 1996. It plays an important role in creating informational society and electronic economy. It performs research activity in the field of expert systems and education.

  3. Purpose of development General purpose: • Developing database systems suitable to the related standards for ethnography, • Modeling and preparing expert system built on these databases, • Loading the system with basic data • Making available the prepared work through Internet, thereby ensuring to ethnographical researchers and nonprofessional persons the conditions of research work and obtaining information. Scientific objectives: • Application of artificial intelligence, modern instruments of knowledge-based technology in a special field disregarded in the world, further development of it adequate to the special needs of this field.

  4. Expert System - AI • Information instead of data, and presenting the adequate relations • Human - machine communication happens in a language that stands near the human language • The system makes decisions, suggestions using "expertise coded in lines" • It explains its conclusions, decisions if needed All of these developed for the field of ethnography.

  5. Further development of the project • Databases • Expert system E-learning Sixth Framework Programme e-Content

  6. Database 1 User Interface Explanatory system Database n Reasoning device Knowledge base Specialist Interface Knowledge base compiler System structure INTERNET • Knowledge-base: mechanical transformation of way of thinking of experts concerning the given questions, and the most useful way of thinking in treatment of this topic. • Reasoning device: commands given by the user are executed through the application of rules in the knowledge-base, initiating further communication with the user if needed. Data in database are becoming information during this operation. • Explanatory system: it informs the user about the background of the decisions and suggestions made by the engine. • Knowledge-base compiler: it helps the work of the knowledge-engineer when importing the rules into the system and in case of modification of them if needed.

  7. Levels of database organisation • Research areas: popular belief, popular usage, tales, legends, society, ethnographical cartography, tematics of ethnographical atlas, folk music, folk dance • Space: Carpathians, County system (abaúj-Torna, Árva etc., since in ethnography they work on the basis of county-scheme of settlement-cadastral of 1913), larger region units (Jászság, Kalotaszeg etc.), certain settlements • Time: before 1848-49, age of autocracy and dualism till the institutionalization of ethnography (1889), data collection period of ethnography, running up (1890-1920), between the two wars (1920-1945), socialism (1945-1990), after changing the system: research of the present
