  1. Renewable Energy in Israel Eyal Naor Deputy Chief of Mission Embassy of Israel, Serbia October 19th, 2012

  2. Israel is a small country (Size: 22,000 Square Kilometers) Population is around 7.7 Million, half of the land is an arid desert Israel is also one of the leading countries in innovation, Science, Hi-Tech, Medicine, Agriculture, Water Management and more..

  3. And so, the demand is growing..

  4. Global oil supply can't meet global oil demand forever.. Some estimations say that by 2040, production levels may be down to around 20% of what we currently consume

  5. The environmental aspect

  6. Overview –Energy in Israel • Israel’s main current sources of energy are: Coal (43%) and Gas (37%) • Israel wishes to advance to alternative resources (Its efforts were given a boost by the recent discovery of substantial offshore reserves of natural gas) • Renewable energy sources: only 0.1% of the total capacity.. • Today, the national grid can absorb only 5%-20% of its energy from renewable sources - due to its inability to tolerate fluctuation • ‘Israel Electric Corporation’ (IEC) is the sole supplier of all electrical • power in Israel • The political situation prevents interconnections with neighboring countries (harms future chances for large-scale exports of electricity within the region\to the EU)

  7. Government Milestones • A Government resolution fromJanuary 2009: 10% of the total electricity generation will come from Renewable Energy by 2020 (6.43 TWh) • Interim target of 5% by 2014 • The total installed capacity is expected to reach 2.76 GW in 2020

  8. Meeting the Government’s targets for electricity production from Renewable Sources

  9. leading Israeli companies in Solar Technology Cumulative installed capacity now stands at 61 MW, of which around 88% represents grid-connected systems.

  10. Israeli Wind Technology companies

  11. Bio Fuels • A combination of computational genomics, molecular biology and advanced traditional breeding methods are used in order to improve commercial crops that can serve as resources for the mass production of bio-fuels. • Agricultural and animal waste • Domestic waste • Jathropha • Algae

  12. ‘Better Place’developed an electric car and infrastructure, while trying to make it more affordable, convenient and sustainable than a gasoline-powered car. Currently operates in Israel, Denmark, Australia, North America, Japan and China.

  13. Going green, going strong Israel was recently ranked one of the top-three nations worldwide which provide the best conditions for Clean- Technology Startup companies (“CleanTech Group” – January 2012)

  14. As a world leader in Clean and Renewable Technology, Israel took upon itself to become a leader - also in the usage of Renewable Energy

  15. Thank you!
