South Mecklenburg High School (SMHS) • 8 Classes per year • 4, 90 minute, classes per day • A/B Day schedule • Classes run every other day for the entire year • Elective classes only • 4x4 Schedule • You attend one class every day for the semester • Take your exam in January & start a new class • All core classes • Some electives

English • Literacy I / English I (2 sem) • You will be assigned to this class if you score a 1 on the 8th Language Arts EOG • Freshman Focus / English I (2 sem) • This course will assist with the transition to high school • Adv. Lit. Concepts / Honors English I + (2 sem) • Requires a high work ethic, self-motivated, and a high reading level • + weighted course: one quality point (A=5 towards GPA)

Math • Foundations of Algebra / Algebra I (2 sem) • Students who have not taken Algebra 1 in 8th grade and scored a 364 or below on the 8th grade Math EOG • Algebra I (1 sem) • Students who have not taken Algebra 1 in 8th grade and scored a 365 or above on the 8th grade Math EOG • Honors Geometry + (1 sem) • Students who have taken Algebra 1 in 8th grade and passed the Algebra EOC • + weighted course: one quality point (A=5 towards GPA)

Science • Earth / Environmental Science (1 sem) • Standard 9th grade science class • Honors Earth / Environmental Science + (1 sem) • Honors 9th grade science class • Requires a higher reading ability • Faster pace • Preparation for AP classes later in high school • Honors Biology + (1 sem) • Requires a higher reading ability • Faster pace • Preparation for AP classes later in high school • You STILL have to take Earth / Environmental Science to graduate • + weighted course: one quality point (A=5 towards GPA)

Social Studies • World History (1 sem) • Standard 9th grade social studies class • Honors World History+ (1 sem) • Honors 9th grade social studies class • Requires a higher reading ability • Faster pace • Preparation for AP classes later in high school • + weighted course: one quality point (A=5 towards GPA)

World Languages • Spanish I • Spanish II ## • Requires the 7th & 8th grade Spanish I & II sequence in middle school as well as passing the exam • Spanish for Native Speakers I • French I • German I • Japanese I • *2 years is required for graduation • **Colleges will not look at your application without at least 3 years sometimes 4 years • ***If you are only taking 2 or 3 years it is best to wait and take them at the end of HS (ex: 11th grade Spanish I & 12th grade Spanish II)

JROTC • The purpose of the NJROTC program is to instill in students the values of citizenship, service, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment. • JROTC is NOT a military recruiting program • JROTC is also NOT a “boot camp” program for students with behavior issues.  Students who cannot accept taking orders from other students, who cannot handle constructive criticism, and who have trouble complying with school regulations will not enjoy JROTC and will likely fail the course, in the process making the course less fulfilling for the other students.   21. FAQs • Can I change my schedule? • NO. After the 1st 10 days of school no schedules will be changed unless there is a problem with core courses. • Can I pick my teachers? • NO. You are placed in classes according to the space available. • How many classes can I miss? • If you miss more than 10 days of any class (excused, unexcused, or OSS) you will fail. • You may be able to arrange make-up time with the teachers after school or on the weekend. Each minute you miss must be made up (1 class = 90 minutes).
