  3. Be Realistic What can you do with the available time? money? people? Getting education funding is NOT necessarily easier than getting research funding

  4. Know Your Funder • Programmatic priorities • Make sure your grant is going to the right place • Talk to the program manager • Visit in person • Read the RFP carefully

  5. Prepare • Know what is being done • Lit search • Professional education meetings • Work must be original • Exception: programs that specifically support adaptation

  6. Partnerships • Find people who know things you don’t • Establish partnerships early • Divide responsibilities • Document activities

  7. Assessment • How do you ‘know it works’? • Formative/Summative • Use external assessor • Integrated into overall plan

  8. Dissemination Plan • Posting on the web is NOT dissemination • Publish • Talks • Materials

  9. Perseverance • Don’t be discouraged by an initial failure • Do use referee comments • Do talk to people with successful grants • Do volunteer to serve as a reviewer
