One typically associates the word, “devastation,” with physical destruction. War, for example, is a time in which two countries battle for a piece of land or for a people’s rights. Buildings are destroyed. Families are torn apart. The results, no matter who the victor is, is usually extreme physical devastation. But often in life, in more every day occurrences, simple moments actually can lead to another type of devastation: emotional.This can be just as traumatic as seen in the short story, “The Scarlet Ibis.” Author, James Hurst, illustrates a tale about two brothers…(insert synopsis)…. Eventually, Hurst shows us how pride can lead to devastation through his use of conflict.
