  5. Southern Secession Dec. 1860-Feb.1861 • S.C. first to secede • Then Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas • Start of Confederate States of America • Jefferson Davis elected president of Confederacy

  6. Armed Conflict Begins April-July 1861 • Confederates seize Fort Sumter in Charleston S.C. from Union • Lincoln declares a state of insurrection • Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina secede • 1st Major Battle- 1st Battle of Bull Run or Manassas, VA

  7. War of Attrition 1862 • Feb-April- Grant wins victories in TN • March- Battle of Ironclads- Monitor (North) VS. Merrimack (South) • April-Aug.- Lee and Jackson (South) win battles in VA

  8. Battle of Antietam or Sharpsburg, MD Sept. 1862 • Northern Victory • Heavy casualties- about 23,000 total • Lee retreats to VA, fails to gain MD • France and England stay out of War • Lincoln issues Emancipation Proclamation • McClellan (North) relieved of position

  9. Lincoln Preserves the Union? • Attempts to balance order and rights • Suspends Writ of Habeas Corpus 1861 until end of war • Issues Emancipation Proclamation 1862 • Deals with poor military leadership until Grant • Numerous conflicts with Supreme Court Chief Justice Taney

  10. The War Continues Jan-June 1863 • Draws and victories for North and South • No Definitive Victories • South starting to lose some key officers • Lincoln still has not appointed Grant the commander

  11. Battle of Gettysburg July 1-3 1863 • Lee attempts to invade the North • Union forces Confederates to retreat • Turning Point- Beginning of the end for the Confederates • Meade forces Lee to retreat but fails to deliver knock out

  12. War Continues July-Dec. 1863 • Grant wins at Vicksburg • Draft Day Riots in NYC • Lincoln delivers the Gettysburg Address

  13. African American Soldiers • Paid less than white soldiers • Around 200,000 Africans served in Navy and Army • Participated in combat in 1863-1865 • 54th Regiment of Massachusetts

  14. Closing out the War 1864 • Grant appointed head of the Union Forces • Series of Union Victories • Sherman captures Atlanta, GA and then marches to Savannah • “Sherman’s March to the Sea” scorched earth policy

  15. Final Events of the War 1865 • Jan.- 13th Amendment outlaws slavery • April- Petersburg VA surrenders to Union • Confederates evacuate their capital in Richmond • Union takes Richmond, VA • Lee surrenders at Appomattox Courthouse • Lincoln is assassinated • Reconstruction begins
