3. Women are the pearls of Africa아프리카의 진주, 여성 • Women invest per Dollar available to them, 87 Cent direct for the whole –being of their family, Men only 60 여성들은 1달러가 주어지면 그 중 87센트를 가족을 위해 쓰지만, 남성들은 60센트 밖에 쓰지 않는다. • 80 percent of the food production done unpaid by Women, although they do own less than 10 percent of the land. 나미비아 농작의 80% 를 여성들이 하지만, 정작 돈을 받거나 땅을 갖지는 못한다. (여성소유-전체의 10%) Penduka is a self-supporting Programm with the aim to empower vulnurable women by training them in fields they can excellarate and earn an income through it. 펜두카는 사회적으로 소외되고 연약한 여성들에게 그들이 잘할 수 있는 분야에 교육을 제공하며 그것을 통해 수입을 얻게 해 주는 독자 운영 프로그램이다. * Volker Seitz, Afrika wird armregiert oder wie man Afrika wirklich helfen kann.

PENDUKA for women여성을 위한 펜두카 Isobel • Penduka means:Wake up Martha Muulyau and Christien Roos have established Penduka as a NGO ( non -governmental organization) in 1992 • Training, development and employment creation, by gaining self respect for vulnurable women are the main goals of Penduka • Penduka believes in development based at : own power“. Women are taught to be independent and financialy selfsupporting • Penduka based in Katutura, ca. 7 km out of Capital city Windhoek. Many women from the surrounded informal settlement ( slums) are working at Penduka • ca. 1000 women are trained by Penduka • ca. 120 women are working for Penduka on a full time base Martha Muulyau, Mitgruenderin von Penduka • 펜두카 : ‘깨어나라’라는 뜻 • 1992년 마사 물라요와 크리스틴 루스가 설립한 NGO, 펜두카 • 소외된 여성들이 일을 하고 교육을 받으며 자존감을 얻게 하는 것이 펜두카의 핵심 목표이다. • 펜두카는 “스스로의 힘”을 기본으로 한 성장을 믿는다. 여성들에게 독립성과 경제적인 자립을 교육시킨다. • 펜두카는 수도 ‘빈트후크’에서 7km 정도 떨어진 ‘카투투라’ 에 위치해 있다. 펜두카에서 일하는 많은 여성들은 ‘슬럼’ 지역에서 살던 사람들이다. • 펜두카에서 교육받는 여성의 수 : 1000명 정도 • 풀타임 근무자 수 : 120명 정도 Katutura

5. Penduka products펜두카 상품들 • By making use of traditional techniques the Penduka women produce unique items like: interieur products for living, kitchen, bathroom, children, accessoires 펜두카의 여성들이 전통기술을 사용하여 만드는 특별한 아이템 : 리빙인테리어 소품들, 아동 소품, 장신구 • Products with a story: Penduka products are not based on a set design, rather encourage individual producers to tell there own story or a message they want to bring across. This could be „thankfull ness, passion for children, the tragedy of ill health, globalisation, be wise with water, food production. 이야기가 있는 상품 : 펜두카는 상품의 디자인에 생산자 개인의 이야기나 전달하고 싶은 메시지를 직접 옮기도록 한다. • Techniques: hand embroidery, african batik, recycling glass,plastic, paper,rubber, ceramics, making use of natural resources like seed,leather, horn etc 기술: 자수, 아프리칸 바틱프린트, 재활용 유리, 플라스틱, 종이, 고무, 세라믹, 그리고 가죽, 동물의 뿔 등 자연소재 • The women will benefit directly from improved sales by a worked out bonus system 판매율이 올라가면 계획된 보너스 시스템에 따라 직접적인 이익을 받는다. • Penduka products are sold in : South Africa, Namibia, Germany, Holland, Norway, S Korea, US(limited) 펜두카 상품들이 판매되는 곳 : 남아프리카공화국, 나미비아, 독일, 네덜란드, 노르웨이, 한국, 미국 • Soon a webshop will be opened (www.penduka.com) 인터넷 쇼핑몰을 오픈할 예정 (www.penduka.com)

6. Penduka glass recyclingfrom bottle to bracelet펜두카에서는 유리병이 팔찌가 된다. • From recycled glass you can make lovely handshaped beads which can be used for jewellery & accessoires. 재활용 유리를 활용해 손으로 모양을 낸 비즈를 만들어 장신구나 액세서리를 만들 수 있다. • With Olivia and Rebekka you can do a workshop on glass recycling and design your own piece of jewellery. 올리비아와 레베카가 진행하는 유리 재활용 워크샵을 통해자신만의 장신구를 디자인할 수 있다. • collecting of glass from wine/beer bottles,windowglass • seperation of colours • cleaning the glass • poundering of the glass • Siffing • fill up the clay moults • melting and forming • jewellery design • 유리 모으기 – 와인, 맥주병, 창문 • 색상별로 분류 • 깨끗하게 씻기 • 흙으로 만든 틀 채우기 • 불에 녹이고 모양잡기 • 장신구 디자인 • 유리를 두들겨 조각내기 • 작은 조각과 파우더 거르기

7. PendukaPotteryProductionFrom clay to cup펜두카의 도자기 탄생 이야기 • Pottery is one of the most populair handicrafts in Namibia, traditionally made from local clay for functional items like watercoolers, pots, cups etc. 도예는 나미비아에서 가장 인기 있는 핸디크래프트 중 하나다. 전통적으로는 지역의 흙을 사용해 워터쿨러, 주전자, 컵 등 기능적인 아이템을 만든다. • Penduka gives a modern touch to the ceramics which blends in with the : story telling. 펜두카는 그 도자기에 현대적인 감각을 접목시킨다 : 스토리텔링을 통해서 • Motivs from day to day life in Namibia are told by the Penduka women. Ruusa is the main potter at Penduka and enjoyes her work very much she makes: cups, plates, vases,pots, bowls etc. 펜두카의 여성들은 나미비아의 일상을 모티프로 표현한다. 루사는 펜두카의 핵심 생산자로 일하는 것을 매우 즐거워하며 , 컵, 접시, 꽃병, 주전자, 그릇 등을 만든다. • proof, shaping and colouring first! By firing the clay it makes the product durable and dishwash • unique story telling on plate and cup by Ruusa?? • lots of different possibilities with uniqueness • clay on the wheel or in moulds to make the base • your own story or desired motif can be ordered at Penduka • 흙을 물레에 돌리거나, • 틀을 만든다. • 특별한 이야기를 담은 접시 • 컵 by 루사 • 본인만의 이야기나 모티프를 오더할 수 있다. • 모양이 잘 잡혔는지 확인하고 색 입히기! • 불에 구워 튼튼하게 만들기! • 독특한 디자인이 가능하다

8. Penduka batik productionfrom flour,textile,paint- curtains,cushions펜두카 바틱 프린트 – 밀가루, 원단, 페인트가 합쳐져커튼, 쿠션커버가 되는 과정 • Materials to use for Batik are 100% natural fibres like cotton, linnen, silk, wool 바틱 프린트에 사용하는 원단은 면, 린넨, 실크, 울 등 100% 자연소재이다. • African motives in general are bold, simple and symbolic 아프리칸 모티프는 대체로 선명하고, 간단하며 상징적이다. • Namibia Nature gives Penduka lots of inspiration on colour combinations&designs like: plants and trees and the african wild animals 펜두카가 색상배합이나 디자인을 할 때 나미비아의 자연에서 많은 영감을 얻는다 : 나무, 풀, 야생 동물들 • After the design is made from the paste. It needs to dry. Colouring in by hand is time consuming • all colours get mixed by hand . • Paint is biodegradeble and needs heat fixation. • paste is made from flour, water and salt • new ideas start by trying • different techniques and • sharing with one another • Dried flourpaste removed by Martha . Cloth available for bags, cushion covers etc • 밀가루, 물, 소금을 섞어 반죽을 만든다. • 반죽으로 디자인을 한 다음, 건조시킨다. 손으로 일일이 칠하는 것은 많은 시간이 소요된다. • 모든 색상을 손으로 섞는다. 자연적으로 분해되는 페인트를 사용하며 열로 고정시킨다. • 여러가지 기술들을 사용해보고 서로 의논하며 새로운 아이디어를 만든다. • 건조시킨 밀가루 반죽을 제거하고 있은 마사(Martha) 염색된 천은 가방, 쿠션커버 등에 쓰인다.

9. Story telling Penduka embroidery이야기가 있는 펜두카의 자수 ee • … • … womenfromrural areas receive material and yarn from Penduka by there team coordinator 시골에 있는 생산자들은 그들의 팀 매니저를 통해 펜두카로부터 원단과 실을 받는다. 4 times a year the members of the rural Penduka embroidery groups come to Penduka for extra training 1년에 4번 모든 생산자들이 펜두카에 모여 추가 교육을 받는다. Quality control takes place first in the rural areas , than at Penduka by Loide 각 지역에서 먼저 품질체크를 한 다음, 펜두카에서 로이드(사진)가 한 번 더 체크한다. Prieska is cutting the material to be send out to the rural embroidery groups 프리스카(사진)이 각 지역 그룹에 나눠줄 원단을 자르고 있다. Finalizing the product takes place at Penduka central production unit 봉제와 마무리는 펜두카에서 한다.

10. A guest at Penduka펜두카의 손님 • Penduka women welcome you as a visitor in their own Namibian manners • 펜두카의 여성들은 나미비아의 방식으로 당신을환영하고 맞이할 것이다. • Penduka offers accommodation in African round huts with own unique interior made by the Penduka women. Situated at the lake offers you tranquility, culture, bird watching ! • 펜두카는 그들이 직접 만든 특별한 인테리어가 있는 아프리카의 동그란 오두막을 제공한다. 새가 날아다니는 고요한 호수 옆에서 그들의 문화와 평화로움을 즐길 수 있다! • Penduka Restaurant offers you Namibian dishes , making use of own produced vegetables. From the terrace with a view over the lake or as room service on your own terrace. • 펜두카 식당에서는 그들이 직접 재배한 채소를 이용한 나미비아 음식을 제공한다. 호수가 바라볼 수 있는 식당 테라스에서, 또는 룸 서비스로 당신의 방 테라스에서 식사를 할 수 있다. • To cook the women use parabol solar heating most of the time to save on energy. • 요리할 때 쓰는 전기는 대부분 태양에너지를 사용한다. • While staying at Penduka you can participate in different workshops: african cooking, dancing, glass recycling, embroidery and african batik. • 펜두카에 머무르며 여러 워크샵에 참여할 수 있다 : • 아프리칸 요리, 춤, 유리재활용, 자수, 아프리칸 바틱

11. why/how did we start with Penduka우리는 왜/어떻게 펜두카를 시작했을까 • Women in Namibia suffer from low social status • If women are disabled, infected by HIV/Aids or TB, or not educated at all, this status is worse • Result: entire family lives in poverty • Penduka tries to break this negative circle by providing these women with: • simple skill training • resulting in : making a product close to their own heart – gaining self confidence- open for further development- empowerment • 나미비아의 여성들은 낮은 사회적 지위로 고통 받고 있다. • 장애가 있거나, 에이즈에 감염되었거나, 교육을 전혀 받지 못한 여성이라면 그 지위가 더욱 낮다. 결과적으로, 가족 전체가 가난 속에 살게 된다. • 펜두카는 이런 악순환을 깨기 위해 다음과 같은 일을 한다: • 간단한 기술 교육 : • 그들 마음에서 우러나오는 상품을 만들게 한다자신감을 얻고 더 성장하길 원한다 • 권한과 능력부여

12. why/how did we start with Penduka우리는 왜/어떻게 펜두카를 시작했을까 • Penduka creates a job for every women whom has succesfully finished the training • Resulting in: income for the person- income for the whole family- less poverty • Penduka shows results to the outside world • Resulting in : more credibility, more support, more interest , more work • Penduka starts with exchange of knowledge and techniques worldwide • Resulting in: unique design input, more fun to make, more sharing, more inspiration, better quality, more income, more empowerment • 펜두카는 교육을 성공적으로 마친 모든 여성들에게 일자리를 제공한다. • 결과 : 여성 개인의 수입은 곧 가족 전체에 도움이 되고 가난에서 벗어나는데 도움이 된다. • 펜두카는 이런 결과를 투명하게 오픈한다. • 결과 : 신뢰성, 지원, 관심을 받게 되고, 더 많은 일자리 제공으로 연결된다. • 펜두카는 세계 여러 나라와 지식과 기술을 교환한다. • 결과 : 독특한 디자인지원, 영감등을 얻고 나누며 더 재미있게 일할 수 있다. • 제품의 질 향상에도 도움이 되며 이것은 곧 개인의 소득 증가와 역량 강화로 이어진다.

13. Difficulties to overcome극복해야 할 어려운 점 Lack of taking responsibilties, due to the fact that women are not used to have anything 책임감이 없다 - 여성들이 무언가를 가지는 것에 익숙하지 않기 때문에 Lack of concentration due to lack of food and good nutricions or use of own brewed beer. 집중을 잘 못한다 – 충분한 음식이나 좋은 영양소를 섭취하지 못하거나, 직접 만들어 마시는 맥주 때문 Ethnical differences and fights ( 13 different ethnical groups in Namibia with own language and traditions) 다른 민족간의 싸움 (나미비아에는 13개의 다른 민족이 각자의 언어와 전통을 갖고 살고 있다.) Total disturbed idea on power/money/white/black 권력, 돈, 인종에 대한 문제가 나라 전체에 퍼져있다. Trained women did not want to share knowledge with others fearing losing their job. 교육받은 여성들이 자신의 일자리를 잃을 것을 두려워해 자신이 알고 있는 것을 공유하려 하지 않는다. No money from local government 정부가 재정적인 지원을 해주지 않는다. Lot of restrictions from local government 정부로부터 많은 규제를 받는다. Few natural resources 천연자원이 거의 없다. Expensive country due to : size, position, few people,few resources utilized resulting in dependency on import of goods 비싼 나라 : 사이즈, 위치, 적은 인구, 수입품에 의존도가 높아 사용할 수 있는 재료가 제한적임.
