This lesson explores the fundamental principles of telescopes, their importance in astronomy, and the various types available. Participants will sketch a telescope and identify its different parts – focusing on significant components while disregarding less important aspects. The session will cover refractor, reflector, and Cassegrain telescopes, detailing their working mechanisms and the types of light they collect. Importance of space telescopes like Hubble and Chandra will also be discussed, highlighting the challenges of observing certain wavelengths from Earth.

Astronomy 100 What’s the ‘Scope?
ANSWER NOW: Sketch a telescope. • SECOND GOAL: understand why we need telescopes, how a telescope works, and that you need different scopes for different reasons/types of light.
Here are 3 Telescopes • Split into 3 groups. One person record. One person report back. Everyone contribute. • Identify the different parts of your telescope. You don’t need to use the right words, but pick out and give a name to each of the parts you think is important. • Good Example: the tube – very important. • Bad Example: the screws holding something together. Do I care? No.
Do the different telescopes have all the same parts, or are there differences?

What does a telescope DO? • Main lens/mirros • Collect LOTS of light, focus it down. • NOT MAGNIFYING • Eyepiece • MAGNIFIES • Bigger number, bigger eyepiece, less magnification
