  2. Homework-Assigned May 19th Due Today Monday May 24th Page 465 # 1-4, page 467 # 1-4, pg 477 #4, pg. 486 #5-9

  3. 5/24- 1st, 2nd, 3rd Questions and conclusion for Solutions and Dilutions lab • What did you notice about the concentrated solution and the diluted solution? • What is the Molarity equation and what is the dilutions equation? • How can you tell the difference between the concentrated Molarity and the diluted Molarity?

  4. Questions and conclusion for Solutions and Dilutions lab/Do Now Conclusion- What was most challenging about performing the solutions/dilutions lab? What were possible errors in the lab? What could you do differently to make the lab run more efficiently? What could you do to cause the salt to dissolve completely?

  5. Mixtures and Solutions Video Questions-5/24 5th; 5/25- 1st, 2nd, 3rd • 1. Which of the following is an example of a mixture? • 2. What is one difference between a homogeneous mixture and a heterogeneous mixture? • 3. You add salt to a glass of water and stir. All of the salt dissolves in the water. You add more salt to the solution and stir again. This time, the solid salt does not appear to dissolve, and settles to the bottom of the glass. What happened? • 4. Which of the following solutions will NOT conduct an electric current? • 5. What can you do to make a piece of rock salt dissolve more quickly in water? • 6. When you shake a mixture of sand and water, you have made a(n) _____. • 7. “Like dissolves like” means _____. • 8. What is the best way to separate small iron particles from sand?

  6. Do Now- May 25th 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th • What are some factors that affect the rate that a substance will dissolve ? • Solubility [04:15] • Quiz Thursday • Homework Due- pages 465, 467, 477, 486

  7. Mixtures and Solutions Video Clips • Mixtures [06:10] • What Is a Mixture? [01:09] • Heterogeneous and Homogeneous Mixtures [01:16] • Colloids [00:46] • Suspensions [00:47] • Solutions [01:55] • Solubility [04:15] • Alloys [00:31] • Video Quiz: Mixtures and Solutions [03:03]

  8. Do Now- May 26th 1st • What are some factors that affect the rate that a substance will dissolve ? • Solubility [04:15] • Quiz Thursday • Homework Due- pages 465, 467, 477, 486

  9. Review #1 • What is the molarity of a solution that contains 0.102 mol KCl in 5.98 L of solution?

  10. Review Problem #2 • Dissolved in water to make 200 mL of solution, 2.00 g of NaCl would have a concentration (molarity) of ?

  11. Review #3 • An NaOH solution contains 2.90 mol of NaOH, and its concentration is 0.555 M. What is its volume?

  12. May 27th, 2010 Quiz- Today • Take out periodic Tables and Calculators!!!!

  13. Do Now- May 25th, 7thQuiz Today What characteristics make soap a good emulsifying agent? Why is detergent a better choice than soap for laundering with hard water?

  14. Do Now- May 25th, 7th What characteristics make soap a good emulsifying agent? The soap molecule has a nonpolar part and a charged part. The nonpolar part dissolves in oil, and the charged part dissolves in water. Adding soap to an oil-water suspension causes the oil and water to form a stable emulsion.

  15. Do Now- May 25th, 7th Why is detergent a better choice than soap for laundering with hard water? Hard water contains Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions that form insoluble precipitates with soap molecules. A scum may be left on the clothes. Detergents do not form these precipitates.

  16. Invisible inks are colorless solutions. In the case of "Secret Messages", they are an acid (vinegar) and a base (ammonia). The teacher sprays an indicator, in this case cabbage water, that can determine whether the ink is acidic, basic, or neutral by changing color.

  17. May 27th 2010 • What are two examples of acids and bases? • What is pH? • phbrainpop
