  4. Technology Overview Technology Overview Certeon’saCelera includes best of breed technology to provide optimization and acceleration for all essential business applications with the most flexible and scalable platform available today. The aCelera solution scales to support the entire enterprise deployment, whether the initiative is to centralize the infrastructure, consolidate and adopt virtualization, enable mobile users or support business continuity through data replication. The CerteonaCelera solution supports all the deployment scenarios and the widest range of network topologies. • Forwarding Plane • High Performance Proxy • Compressor • Application Acceleration Blueprints • Designed for Virtualization

  5. Technology Overview Forwarding Plane • The aCelera uses a proprietary forwarding plane that allows it to statefully track hundreds’ of thousands of flows while having the minimal CPU impact. The forwarding plane also allows for the most flexible deployment and support of network topologies and including WCCP, VRRP, PBR and static routing.

  6. Technology Overview High Performance Proxy • The aCelera’s proxy allows flows to be locally terminated so that clients and servers receive LAN like performance. The proxy optimizes connections across the WAN providing TCP optimization and multiple network compatibility options including correct addressing and transparent addressing. At the highest end, the proxy is able to handle 50,000 optimized connections with one single virtual appliance instance.

  7. Technology Overview Compressor • The compressor provides an ideal balance between data reduction and maximized throughput. It leverages the Application Acceleration Blueprints to deliver Content Aware De-duplication, separating the application encapsulation from the payload to ensure no long-term performance degradation.

  8. Technology Overview Designed for Virtualization • The aCelera solution was designed specifically to operate in a virtual environment. Here I/O access is slower and restricted when compared to running on native hardware so design optimizations were made such as bulk reading and writing for disk to get the best performance; performance optimizations that other vendors that port their code from their standard hardware appliances will not achieve. aCelera is also the only solution that is designed to be hypervisor agnostic and supports the industry’s three leading hypervisor platforms.

  9. Technology Overview Cross Platform Support • All products in the aCelera WAN optimization family are built using the same code base. This means irrespective of the operating system all features are simultaneously released across the board.

  10. Technology • Content Aware De-duplication • Single Instance Store • Application Acceleration Blueprints • TCP Optimization

  11. Technology Content Aware De-Duplication Network De-Duplication • Network de-duplication in all WAN optimization solutions works on the same principle: content is stored on disk at both ends of the network and when similar content is seen again, messages are sent to the peer device to replay the content locally rather than re-transmitting the data across the WAN. This results in significant bandwidth savings. The performance of different solutions depends on how well they organize the data on disk and how fast they are able to locate and recreate the previously seen content. Performance is also affected not only by how large the disk is but how large the usable disk is.

  12. Technology Content Aware De-Duplication aCeleraContent Aware De-Duplication • The aCelera de-duplication technology goes much further than any other vendor. With Content Aware De-duplication as a data stream is processed by the aCelera instead of just segmenting and building a history of the stream, the aCelera is able to distinguish the protocol used to transfer the content. The aCelera is able to strip off not only the TCP/IP encapsulation but also the application protocol encapsulation e.g. HTTP headers. The result is that the history built on disk is just the content and is very clean. • This has two benefits. Firstly, the disk is not being filled up with one time protocol encapsulation that will never be matched in the future, this means that the disk is being used more effectively resulting in better long term performance. Secondly, as the content is being written very cleanly on disk it gets better matching, in fact a single token can represent the entire content as opposed to the match being interrupted by the non-matching metadata. The result is the better data reduction and faster data transfers and as the data is cleanly written on disk, matching is better when the same content is transferred using different protocols. • For WAN optimization solutions one of the lesser known challenges is that of long-term performance degradation. Without Content Aware De-duplication, the history disk fills up quickly with non-important protocol metadata resulting a in a performance drop off.

  13. Technology Single Instance Store The Challenge • The challenge with de-duplication in WAN optimization solutions is that the databases that store the content in each peer device need to be synchronized. The simple approach is to partition the disks based on the number of connected peers and ensure the databases for the pair are in sync, this is known as a per peer data store. However this poses a scalability problem for the data center in a hub and spoke deployment. For example, if an email was sent to the entire company multiple copies would be stored on the data center appliance, one copy for each peer. This is very inefficient use of the acceleration history disk. With a per peer data store the options are clear: • Divide the data center’s disk by the number of peers. This makes the effective usable disk very small and therefore performance suffers. • Deploy multiple appliances in the data center such that each peer has reasonable store size. This is usually too costly.

  14. Technology Single Instance Store • The CerteonaCelera uses a Single Instance Store. This technology is built into the architecture and it keeps only a single copy of any content irrespective of the peer is being sent to, which protocol is being used and in which direction the data is being transferred. The benefit of this technology is that it allows the solution to scale to support the needs of a large deployment while delivering the performance that is required. • The Single Instance Store technology is critical when supporting an environment with users using a software accelerator for the individual user, otherwise the effective usable data store at the data center would be too small to be effective. The Single Instance Store technology also allows for complex deployment environments, such as meshed networks, to perform.

  15. Technology Application Acceleration Blueprints • Certain legacy application protocols, such as CIFS for file sharing or MAPI for mail, were not designed to run over a WAN. The result is that even with compression and de-duplication the performance of these applications is still poor. The reason is that these protocols so not stream the transfer the data, instead they break it up into chucks and wait for the chunk to be received before sending the next one. This is known as “Chattiness”. Chattiness is a problem that cannot be overcome by adding additional bandwidth; it requires application level intelligence to optimize. • The CerteonaCelera Application Acceleration Blueprints optimize the application protocols so that they can operate efficiently across the WAN. They use techniques such as local acknowledgements of requests, request pipelining, pre-fetching data and combining multiple requests together. The result is significant acceleration of the applications. The Application Acceleration Blueprints also provide the application intelligence to the de-duplication engine to enable the Content Aware De-duplication.

  16. Technology Application Acceleration Blueprints The CerteonaCelera includes the following Application Acceleration Blueprints: • HTTP – The HTTP Blueprint is able to identify both static and dynamic web content and pass that information to the compressor so that it can optimally provide the greatest data reduction. Additional optimizations greatly benefit applications like SharePoint, these include the ability to respond locally to 304 Not Modified requests and optimize authentication requests further reducing the number of round trips and latency. • SSL – Certeon’s SSL Blueprint allows for the acceleration of encrypted flows used either for tunneling SSL or by applications that use HTTPS. The SSL Blueprints uses a patented technology that ensures the security trust model is not broken, guaranteeing that the server certificates never leave the data center. • CIFS – The CIFS Blueprint uses multiple techniques including read-ahead, write-behind and directory optimizations. These significantly help optimize the usage of CIFS whether it’s a file download, upload, directory scan or file scan. • MAPI – The MAPI Blueprint automatically detects MAPI connections and responds by pipelining multiple MAPI messages together for transport across the WAN. By eliminating protocol chattiness, aCelera makes Outlook/Exchange significantly faster over high latency connections. This in particular benefits the transfer of attachments which can see download time reduction and bandwidth savings of greater than 90%. • Outlook Anywhere – In order to avoid connecting VPNs to access email, Microsoft recommends Outlook Anywhere. This tunnels MAPI/RPC over HTTP(S). The Outlook Anywhere Blueprints is able to identify Outlook traffic being tunneled and automatically apply the SSL, MAPI and HTTP Blueprints technologies. • iSCSI – The iSCSI Blueprint is able to parse the block level SCSI data and separate it from the SCSI operations to perform pipelining and ensure that the compressor is able to provide the highest level of data reduction.

  17. Technology TCP Optimization • The CerteonaCelera optimizes TCP transfers so they are more efficient across the WAN. The TCP optimization allows for higher bandwidth utilization in the WAN in both low and bandwidth environments, faster recovery after any packet loss and WAN bandwidth fairness with other flows. The TCP optimization includes the following features: • Window Scaling – increases the default 64K TCP window size to ensure efficient throughput in LFNs (Long Fat Networks) • Slow Start with Congestion Avoidance – Determines available bandwidth and avoids sending more data than network can handle. Avoids network congestion • Fast Convergence – Rapidly increases throughput of each new TCP connection ensure optimum throughput • Selective Acknowledgements – Able to precisely determine which packets were lost during transmission so only those need to be retransmitted
