  1. Bell Work 12/04/13 On your desk: P.R.I.D.E card I.N. Pencil/Pen • What letter grade do you think you received on the EQ Exam? • How much time did you spend preparing for the Exam? • How did you prepare for the Exam? (be specific: study guide, flashcards, had someone quiz you, took an online practice quiz, ect)

  2. Volcanoes

  3. TABLE OF CONTENTS Interactive Notebook Introduction 7 Chemistry 9 ………………….. ………………….. Volcanoes ?? 12/4/13

  4. Volcanoes

  5. Adopt a Volcano!! • Research • Present • Build • Erupt!!

  6. Poster boards • Cardboard Boxes • Newspaper • Tape • Paint Start Collecting!

  7. 2.5 more weeks!! 12/4: Wednesday- Volcano Notes 12/5-12/6: Thursday/Friday- Work on Poster board 12/9-12/11: Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday- Build Volcanoes! 12/12-12/16:Thursday/Friday/Monday – REVIEW for FINAL! 12/17-12/18: FINALS 12/19-12/20: Thursday/Friday- Presentations and eruptions!

  8. What is a Volcano? • A volcano is amountain that forms when magma reaches the surface of the Earth. • Magma rises because it is less dense than the solid rock around it.

  9. How do volcanoes form? Magma reaches the surface through a vent Explosive eruption. Boiling mud and ash are hurled into the air Hot lava then flows out through the vent. The lava cools and hardens The process keeps on repeating itself making the volcano grow larger

  10. Volcano Structure • Crater- • bowl shaped pit at top of central vent • Central vent- • magma escapes to the surface • Conduit(side vent)- • leads to side vent • Lava- • magma that has reached the surface • Pipe- • narrow vertical channel • Magma chamber- • pocket where magma collects

  11. Types of Eruptions 1. Quiet (non-Explosive) – • Very hot magma • lowviscosity magma • Flows out fluidly 2. Explosive Eruptions- • High viscosity magma • Clogs a volcanic pipe… • Enormous pressure builds up… • Volcano explodes!!!

  12. On your desk: P.R.I.D.E card I.N. Pencil/Pen Adopt a Volcano worksheet Bell Work 12/05/13 1. Describe what a quiet eruption is. What makes it so “quiet”? • Lowviscosity magma flows out fluidly. There is no explosion. 2. Describe what a explosive eruption is. • High viscosity magma clogs the volcanic pipe. Enormous pressure build up and the volcano explodes!!

  13. Shapes of volcanoes 1. Shield 2. Cinder Cone 3. Composite • They are classified by how they form.

  14. Shield Volcano • Is wide and somewhat flat. • It forms from a quiet eruption. • Lava flows out quietly and for great distances.

  15. Cinder Cone Volcano • Has tall, very steep sides. • Has explosive eruptions. • This eruption produces a lot of cinder and ash.

  16. Composite Volcano • Form from explosive eruptions. • Produce a lot of lava and ash. • Is tall, with steep sides.

  17. Most Volcanoes Occur at Plate Boundaries

  18. Ring of Fire- Contains nearly 75% of the worlds active volcanoes found on land. http://www.cleanvideosearch.com/media/action/yt/watch?v=gRlj5vjp3Ko

  19. Divergent Boundary • Magma moves to the surface as the plates move apart • Mid-Ocean Ridge • Sea-Floor Spreading

  20. Convergent Boundary • Oceanic plate is subducted into the mantle… • This causes melting… • Magma forms and rises to the surface… • Volcano created!!!

  21. Hot Spot • Hot spot stays in one place… • Plates move over the top of it… • Over time, a chain of volcanoes is formed!!! • Is Kauai an active volcano?

  22. Adopt a Volcano!! • Posterboard due at the end of class!!

  23. On your desk: P.R.I.D.E card I.N. Pencil/Pen Bell Work 12/6/13 1. What shape(s) of volcanoes are created from an explosive eruption? • Cinder Cone Volcano • Composite Volcano 2. What shape(s) of volcanoes are created from a quiet eruption? • Shield Volcano

  24. Volcano Construction! Day 1- Framing

  25. Volcano Construction! Day 2- Paper mache

  26. Volcano Construction! Day 3- Painting

  28. On your desk: P.R.I.D.E card I.N. Pencil/Pen Bell Work 12/9/13 1. What type of boundaries create volcanoes? • Convergent and Divergent boundaries 2. What percentage of the world’s earthquakes occur in the Ring of Fire? • 75%

  29. Another Volcano song  • http://www.cleanvideosearch.com/media/action/yt/watch?v=bwTkTzdkVS4

  30. Examples!!

  31. Mount Kilauea (Shield Volcano) Located in Hawaii Presently the most active volcano on the planet Can be walked up to because of its non-violent explosions

  32. Mount St. Helens • Composite volcano • Erupted on May 18, 1980 • Killed over 55 people • Blast removed 1000 ft off the top of the volcano • The explosion could be heard as far away as Canada • Notice the trees…

  33. Krakatau • Composite volcano • Erupted on August 26, 1883 in Indonesia • Explosions were heard 2200 miles away in Australia • Ash was propelled 50 miles into the air • This ash blocked the sunlight for 2 ½ days • Created a tsunami 120 feet tall • Killed 36,000 people

  34. Mount Vesuvius • Composite volcano • Erupted in Pompeii in 79 AD • 10 feet of ash piled on top of the buildings after the explosion • Considered to be one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world • 3,000,000 people live close to it

  35. Mount Pinatubo • Erupted in 1991 • A 7.7 Richter scale earthquake caused the volcanic eruption • Scientists predicted the eruption, and the residents were evacuated • Caused the entire world’stemperatures todrop by 1 degree
