  6. Seeking the counselor . . . Students should complete a Request Form at Spartan Forum on Wednesdays, or in Admin. Red or Silver, unless there is an emergency. 2. Upon receipt of the Request Form, counselors will send passes for students at the next available opportunity.

  7. PARENTS . . . Inform your child’s counselor about a family crisis & other situations affecting your child. If your child is ill, please send a note regarding the absence to the attendance office. Parents may contact the counseling office to request missing assignments after the 3rd consecutive absence, if the student is not returning on the 4th day. When you wish to meet with all, or several, of your child’s teachers, please contact his/her counselor and she will arrange and facilitate an after school meeting for you. For individual conferences, please contact the teacher directly. Do you have your Parent Internet Viewer (PIV)?

  8. Schedule Change Consequences One change to a schedule may cause many changes, including lunch. Classes are leveled, as needed during the year to maintain the best learning environment possible. Students will: select classes for next year during early Spring. use the Course Description Booklet they are provided to read about the different courses offered and prerequisites, if applicable. When working with your child on course requests for next school year, please make sure to note if fees are required for courses. choose courses carefully because administration hires and places teachers based on course enrollment. remember that after the first three weeks, classes cannot be dropped because credit will be lost. (Seat Time Law) A zero will be calculated into the GPA. Class rank is affected.

  9. CFISD Schedule Changes Can be made during the first 15 days of a semester for the following reasons: Prerequisite(s) not met. Student is in the wrong course for his/her grade level. The student already has credit for the course. The student is placed in an inappropriate level. Requirements for K-level, AP, Dual Credit, or Horizons placement are not met.

  12. Texas Legislature HB 3826 Requires students to graduate under the Recommended High School Program in order to be admitted to a four-year state college or university in Texas.

Earning Credits • How is the Semester Grade calculated? • 1st Six Weeks Grade - added twice • 2nd Six Weeks Grade - added twice • 3rd Six Weeks Grade - added twice • Semester Exam – added once (counts as 1/7 of the semester grade) • Total is divided by 7 for the semester average Ex. 1st 6W: 87 x2 = 174 2nd 6W: 93 x2 = 186 3rd 6W: 95 x2 = 190 Sem. Ex: 94 x1 = 94 Total 644/7= 92 .5 credit is awarded for each semester grade of 70 or higher

Promotions Standards 10th grade: 1 year of attendance in high school 5 credits (including English I and Algebra I) 11th grade: 2 years of high school 10 credits (including English II, IPC or Biology, & World History) 12th grade: 3 years of high school 16 credits (including the courses above & English III)

  17. Class Ranking GPA is cumulative by semester Grades in all high school courses are averaged into the GPA except local credits, Athletics III and IV, and Pass/Fail Courses. Students earning a 6.0 or above are recognized with honors at graduation. HS credit is given for some middle school classes, but grades are not typically calculated into the GPA.

Top 10 Percent To be eligible for automatic admission into any Texas public university Graduate in top 10% (except UT Austin-varies) at public or private Texas high school Enroll in college no more than 2 years after graduating high school Meet application deadlines Take THEA or meet the requirements for THEA exemption to register for classes

  20. K/H/AP…Level Changes Occur at the 3rd and 6th week of a six weeks Require teacher/parent approval/notification Horizon changes must be approved by DI’s office. Failing grades in K level result in automatic removal at the six weeks.

Options for Gaining Credit Summer School Cost Approximately $175 ½ credit, $350 per one credit Credit by Exam (CBE) Correspondence (up to 2 credits) Texas Tech or University of Texas Must have an overall average of 75+ for all courses taken You pay for tuition and books ($130 or more per semester) Available spring of 9th grade year All correspondence course work & final exam must be completed by Nov. 1 of the fall semester of the senior year Community College (HCC)

Final Exam Exemptions Fall Semester 10th grade gets 2 course exemptions 80+ average for the semester no more than 3 absences no suspensions, ALC placements, or fines/fees Spring Semester The above applies Plus extra exemptions are given for passing TAKS (70 average in both Fall and Spring semesters)

  25. So….What happens if a student fails a semester? Year Long Courses: Failed 1st semester, passed second semester First and Second semester must average to a 70 or better Example: 60+80=140 divided by 2 = 70 = 1.0 credit Passed 1st semester, failed second semester You only earn ½ credit. Example: 80+60=1/2 or .5 credit You must regain that credit. Semester classes You must pass or re-take

  28. College-bound students should elect to take the most rigorous courses based on ability. Advanced Placement Program: Earn credit for college subjects studied in high school. Not all universities accept AP scores as a replacement for the specific course. Research university of choice to determine if scores are accepted, and if so, what scores are needed to receive college hours. Advanced Placement Courses

  29. Certain upper level courses may earn you credit toward high school graduation requirements & college credit at Lone Star College-Cy-Fair Must satisfy Lone Star College entrance requirements to enroll in dual credit courses For more info on AP & Dual Credit visit the College & Career Center

Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test The most common reasons for taking the PSAT: Receive feedback on strengths and weaknesses on skills necessary for college study Compare scores with those of others applying to college Earn a chance for scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation as an 11th grader Prepare for the SAT To receive information from colleges by checking “yes” to Student Search Service SAT www.collegeboard.com ACT www.act.org

  32. College & Career Night Over 160 colleges/universities, technical, and specialty schools will be represented. Military Academy Night speak with officers & gain information to help you make a decision for your future learn about educational opportunities & the application process at the U.S. service academies College and/or Career Visitations during lunch period brown-bag meetings

  33. College and Career Center On the first Monday of each month, the CCC will hold “College Talk” night from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Open every Monday from 7:00 - 8:00 p.m. for parent and student use with appointment CC Specialist: Brenda Gauthey

Create a Portfolio Keep all important papers, grades, magazine articles, scholarship opportunities, published works, etc. Keep a log/journal of your challenges experiences from 9th grade through 12th grade. Write down your impressions, especially what you do and don’t like about each activity. Keep track of your activities, volunteer work, jobs, and who the contact person is.

  35. Clubs and Organizations An opportunity to become involved in school & meet people An essential element of college entrance requirements A way to exhibit leadership qualities Team work Self-esteem Communication skills

  36. National Honor Society The National Honor Society honors students who exhibit Scholarship, Character, Service, and Leadership. For Juniors and/or Seniors who maintain a grade point average of 5.8 or higher Invitations are extended in the fall of your Junior and Senior years. Students must complete application process and submit on time. Looks great on a transcript!

Teaches students to give back to their community Important element of college entrance requirements Current juniors and sophomores receive certificate of recognition at graduation for 100+ hours of documented service Many organizations offer scholarships based fully, or partially, on community service
