  2. War Against U-Boats • April 1917, it looked like the Germans were going to win the war because of U-Boats. • 1 in 4 British boats leaving Britain did not return. (Food and Ammo) • By the end of April, British had 6 weeks of food left.

  3. Problem Fixed • The new British Prime Minister came up with the Convoy System. • Large groups of merchants ships protected by destroyers. Only lost 1 in 100.

  5. Disaster in Italy • They had been fighting in the Alps since 1915. • Germany joined Austria and drove the Italians out. • Italians ran • Left 2500 guns, and large stocks of food

  6. War In The Desert • The only gleam of hope for the allies in 1917 came in the deserts of the Turkish empire. • The British and Indian troops had been fighting the Turks in Mesopotamia since 1915. • The Allies captured Baghdad

  7. Lawrence of Arabia • Colonel T.E. Lawrence helped the Arabs organize themselves against the Turks. • He loved the desert • Rode camels • Spoke Arabic Led attacks on Hejaz Railway. (supply route) British conquered Palestine & Jerusalem by December 1917.
