  1. 1 Cor. 14:34-35 “Let the women keep silent in the churches; for they are not permitted to speak, but let them subject themselves, just as the Law also says. And if they desire to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is improper for a woman to speak in church.” Addressed a specific problem at Corinth.

  2. 1 Timothy 3:15 “But in case I am delayed, I write so that you may know how one ought to conduct himself in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.” Spoke generically and inclusively of the church at all times, and everywhere.

  3. 1 Timothy 2:11-12 “A woman must quietly receive instruction with entire submissiveness. But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. Spoke generically and inclusively of the church at all times, and everywhere.

  4. The Context of 1 Tim. 2:11-12 • Conduct in “the church...” • Spiritual concerns were Paul’s focus, not secular

  5. 1 Tim. 2:11-12 Does Not Teach... …that women must be “silent”

  6. Silent (4601) 1 Cor. 14:34/sigao Vine: to be silent Quiet (2271) 1 Tim. 2:11-12/hesuchia Vine: quietness

  7. 1 Tim. 2:11-12 Does Not Teach... …that women must be “silent” …that women can’t teach

  8. Acts 2:17-18 “And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of my spirit upon all mankind; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; even upon my bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My spirit and they shall prophesy.”

  9. Acts 18:26 “And he began to speak out boldly in the synagogue. But when Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.”

  10. Acts 21:9 “Now this man had four virgin daughters who were prophetesses.”

  11. 2 Tim. 2:2 “And the things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.”

  12. 2 Timothy 2:2- faithful “men” ANTHROPOS (444) generally, of a human being, male or female, without reference to sex or nationality, W.E. Vines Therefore; faithful “people”, both male and female, were to be entrusted with the gospel and were commanded to teach others.

  13. Women Definately Taught • Acts 2:17-18 - by the spirit • Acts 18:26 - assisting husband • Acts 21:9 - as prophetesses • 2 Tim. 2:2 - as all disciples do

  14. 1 Tim. 2:11-12 Does Not Teach... …that women must be “silent” …that women can’t teach …a distinction in “assemblies”

  15. The conduct described in 1 Tim. 2:11-12 applies to all mixed assemblies in a spiritual context

  16. 1 Tim. 2:11-12 Does Teach... • Spiritually, a woman cannot teach “over” a man • Spiritually, a woman cannot exercise authority over a man

  17. Note: • Discussion / “amen” • Reading a scripture • Writing an article • Asking / answering a question • Contributing an announcement • Giving an opinion when asked • Is NOT exercising ANY authority over anyone!

  18. WHY IS SHE RESTRICTED? - not cultural - not Pauline

  19. WHY IS SHE RESTRICTED? • 1 Tim. 2:13 - the order of creation • 1 Tim. 2:14 - the woman was deceived • 1 Tim. 2:15 - she’s assigned a different role • 1 Cor. 11:8-9 - woman is for man • Man’s headship is scripturally consistent

  20. CONCLUSIONS? Men & Women are One in Christ but Given Different Roles

  21. “I wonder if the church has not been somewhat crippled over the past 30-40 years by women’s fear of violating principles of subjection. The N.T. women mentioned were dedicated to leadership, while always remaining within their God-given roles. If women of today fall short of fulfilling these roles, the church will not be equipped for every work of service.”

  22. The role of men & women is only one part of “the faith” - 1 Timothy 4:6 Is there another part that you should give heed to ???
