  3. TODAY’S WORKSHOP Purpose of today’s workshop is to provide some tips on how to search the internet more effectively when you are doing your assignments

  4. STUDY AND RESEARCH LINK All of the Information for today’s workshop is available under the Study and Research Link of the Boole Library Website http://booleweb.ucc.ie/

  5. QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF INFORMATION When using web search engines for university assignments, you are likely to encounter some difficulties:

  6. QUANTITY How to deal with the sheer quantity of material on the Internet? We will give sometips on this throughout the workshop

  7. QUALITY Much of the material on the web is of dubious quality. In 3rd level you are required to reference all of your information sources. Will your lecturers be happy with the sources you use? If not your marks are likely to suffer.

  8. QUALITY Please Attend Library Workshop “Give Credit/Get Credit: Referencing & Plagiarism” for more information on referencing

  9. EVALUATING INFORMATION SOURCES How can you decide if a source is of sufficient quality? ‘Quality Control’ 12 point Checklist:

  10. Some of the questions you can ask yourself are: Who is it by? (authority) is the author affiliated with an academic institution, OR a journalist/other author/commentator? Look at the ‘about’ or ‘who are we’ section of the site; is there contact information? When was it written? (currency) is it the most up to date research on the subject and is this an important consideration? When was the site last updated?

  11. Who published it? a university press, professional org., established academic publisher OR a commercial organisation, a particular individual, government body? Is the content objective? is there an editorial agenda/viewpoint - sponsors/bias/vested interest OR is there a research methodology? Can it be backed up with evidence? Is there a bibliography?

  12. WIKIPEDIA POOR INFORMATION SOURCE A "wiki" can be edited by anyone who has the proper permissions. Wikipedia is completely open, ANYONE can edit ANYTHING (within reason). You cannot rely on information sourced from Wikipedia, you should NOT REFERENCE it in your assignments. But……it can be useful for ‘getting your head around’ something i.e. background information, understanding a word or concept and for finding relevant keywords for your search, and links and references

  13. HOW CAN YOU IMPROVE YOUR SEARCH? 1) Using ‘basic search’ on Google 2) Using ‘advanced search’ on Google 3) Using Google Booksand Google Scholar 4) Using Other Search Engines 5) Using LibrarySubject Guides

  14. ASSIGNMENT “Discuss the role that religion plays in the lives of Irish people who emigrate” Keywords: religion – Irish -emigration www.google.ie

  15. OTHER SEARCH ENGINES FOR EXAMPLE YAHOO– www.yahoo.ie EXALEAD– www.exalead.com/search ZUULA – www.zuula.com Microsoft Academic Search – http://academic.research.microsoft.com
