  1. What is an Instructional Technology Resource Teacher? A brief explanation of my role in making your day more productive.

  2. Our Virginian Government has finally realized that a lack of investing in quality technology education has greatly impacted the education of the students in your classroom. They have adopted new state technology standards and now you're expected to integrate them! Great! Just one more thing we have to teach! Is the time, effort, and money really worth it?

  3. This seems a little overwhelming. Since you have so much already to think about, what is the point of adding one more straw to the already overloaded camel’s back?

  4. There is a very good reason for you to integrate technology into your teaching. Your students. Digital Native: Anyone born since 1980. Digital Immigrant: Anyone born prior to 1980. These terms coined by Marc Prensky. From On the Horizon (NCB University Press, Vol. 9 No. 5, October 2001) If you wish to read his article, please see me for a copy.

  5. What is the difference? computers telephones videogames radios/television email To communicate with each other so that learning can take place. Text messaging Polaroid cameras Digital music, images, etc. typewriters Digital Native Digital Immigrant

  6. You MUST adapt No longer can we as educators assume that students will learn through our “tried and true” methods. We need to learn the language of the students so that we can teach them or wait until they are adults and pray that they will educate themselves.

  7. What can I do in my classroom?

  12. Digital storytelling

  13. Multi-media research projects (power point/producer—great for 5th graders!)

  14. Web page reports

  15. Student created projects

  16. Don’t feel you have to do it alone! I am not just one more person coming into your room to harass you…. I have a specific purpose and a definite job description. Instructional technology resource teachers (ITRTs) provide on-site and on demand assistance for fellow teachers to create different forms of learning and teaching with the help of technologies. They seek to improve student learning by showing teachers the thoughtful applications and best practices of these new tools.

  17. How will I assist you? I am NOT going to hunt for web sites or burn CD’s for you and then call it a day! • Plan or co-plan lessons • Model • Team-teach • Observe & coach (NOT EVALUATE!) • Staff development

  18. “For the first time in history, students are no longer limited by their teachers’ ability and knowledge.” – Mark Anderson, AZ State Legislature

  19. I will be in your classroom during your planning time during the next two weeks to help you set goals for your technology integration this year. Email me with your plans and ideas! mlewis@amherst.k12.va.us
