  1. Division • Let this family help you remember the steps in long division. Daddy Mother Sister Cat Brother Rover

  2. Division Procedure DMSCBR • Each family member represents a step in solving long division problems. Daddy Mother Sister Cat Brother Rover

  3. 1 3) 497 Step One - Divide • Divide 3 into the first number in the dividend. • 4 hundreds divided into 3 groups with 1 hundred in each group • Write a 1 above the 4 because that’s the current dividend. Dad

  4. 1 3) 497 3 Step Two - Multiply • Multiply 3 groups with 1 hundred in each group is 3 hundreds. • Write the answer below the number you just divided into. Mother

  5. 1 3) 497 3 1 Step Three - Subtract • 3 hundreds have been divided equally with 1 hundred leftover • Be sure to line up your numbers carefully. Sister

  6. 1 3) 497 3 1 Step Four - Compare Cat • After subtracting, compare the differencedigit with the divisor. It should be less than the divisor, or else another group could be made.

  7. 1 3) 497 3 1 9 Step Five – Bring Down • 9 tens to add to the 1 hundred (10 tens) to divide into 3 groups. Brother

  8. Step Five – Repeat or Remainder Dog • If all digits in the divisor have not been used, repeat the steps in the same manner as before, as shown in the next set of slides. 1 3) 497 3 1 9

  9. 1 6 3 Repeat Step One - Divide • Divide 3 into the new number. • 19 tens divided into 3 groups gives 6 tens in each group • Write a 6 above the 9 because that’s the current dividend. Dad 3) 497 1 9

  10. Repeat Step Two - Multiply • Multiply 3 groups with 6 in each group to get 18 tens. (3 x 6 = 18) • Write 18 below the number you just divided into. Mother 1 6 3) 497 3 1 9 18

  11. 1 6 3) 497 3 1 9 18 1 Repeat Step Three - Subtract • 18 tens have been divided equally with 1 ten leftover • Be sure to line up your numbers carefully. Sister

  12. Step Four - Compare Cat • After subtracting, compare the differencedigit with the divisor. It should be less than the divisor, or else another group could be made. 1 6 3) 497 3 1 9 18 1

  13. 1 6 3) 497 3 1 9 18 1 7 Repeat Step Four – Bring Down • If there are more digits in the dividend, bring the third digit in the dividend down. • 7 ones to add to the 1 ten (10 ones) to divide into 3 groups. Brother

  14. Step Five – Repeat or Remainder Rover 1 6 5 r2 • If there are more digits in the dividend, repeat the procedure. • If there are no more digits in the dividend, write the final subtraction answer as a remainder. • If there is no remainder, you’re finished! Pat yourself on the back for a job well done. 3) 497 3 1 9 18 1 7 15 2
