  1. RESTORATION WHAT DOES IT MEAN ?

  2. TO RESTORE TO PLACE BACK IN ORIGINAL CONDITION

  3. THE MEANING OF RESTORATION • To restore the New Testament church in zeal, teaching, and practice • To speak where the Bible speaks and to be silent where the Bible is silent • To return to the New Testament as our authority and guide

  4. BASIS FOR RESTORATION • Jesus established his church (Matt. 16:18) • There were warnings of a “falling away” (II Thess. 2:1-8) • The church departed from God’s original plan (I Tim. 4:1-4) • There was an apostasy from the church as God gave it (Acts 20:28-32) • The Bible plan is still the same (I Pet. 1:22-23) • Our duty is to call people back to God’s original plan (I Pet. 4:11; Isa. 8:20; Jer. 6:16).

  5. DENOMINATIONALISM Began about 500 years ago – not a part of God’s original plan

  6. Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, where Luther nailed the 95 Theses

  7. RESTORATION OR REFORMATION? NOT THE SAME! • REFORMATION – “To reform” • RESTORATION - “To restore” • The Reformation caused denominationalism

  8. FOUR STREAMS • James O’Kelly (1735 – 1826) The Republican Methodists No Name but Christian – No Guide but the Bible • Abner Jones (1772-1841) - Elias Smith (1769-1846) Forsook Calvinism - Became Christians ONLY • Barton W. Stone (1772 – 1844) Left Springfield Presbytery – Became Christian ONLY • Thomas (1763-1854) and Alexander Campbell (1786-1866) • Speak where the Bible speaks
