Virtualization show of hands • How many out there are planning on using virtualization in their IT organization? • How many out there are actually using some sort of virtualization in their IT organization? • How many out there are currently running the E-Business Suite in a virtualized environment?

Definition (Wikipedia) "[Virtualization is] a technique for hiding the physical characteristics of computing resources, thru encapsulation, from the way in which other systems, applications, or end users interact with those resources. This includes making a single physical resource appear to function as multiple logical resources; or it can include making multiple physical appear as a single logical resource."

Oracle’s stance on Virtualization • Oracle does not certify any of their software products to run on virtualized software except one…Oracle VM • Oracle will only provide support for issues that either are known to occur on the native OS, or can be demonstrated not to be as a result of running a virtualized product • If the problem is determined not to be a known Oracle issue, Oracle will refer the customer to the third-party vendor

Oracle VM • Hypervisor / Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM) - virtualization platform that allows multiple operating systems to run on a host computer at the same time • Native or bare-metal • Hosted • Guest operating system runs at the second level above the hardware • Operating systems must be explicitly ported to run on top of a paravirtualized VMM

Direction of Virtualization • According to Gartner • Virtualization will be the biggest driver for IT infrastructure and operations spending over the next several years • Virtualization will be the "highest-impact trend" for IT through 2012, predicting it will determine how IT administrators manage, buy, deploy and plan their future strategies

Licensing • Soft-partitioning • Segments the operating system using OS resource managers • Not permitted as a means to determine or limit the number of software licenses required for any given server • Hard-partitioning • Physically segments a server, by taking a single large server and separating it into distinct smaller systems ** Oracle VM can also be used as hard partitioning **
