  2. Intorduction • KONY 2012 • COUNTRIES 204 • PLEDGES 3,590,051 • FILM VIEWS 104,506,332 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_Ue6REkeTA&feature=player_embedded • Invisible children • spearhead awareness and advocacy work internationally

  3. Objectives of KONY 2012 • Make Ugandan war criminal Joseph Kony known, to push for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice. • Capture Kony in 2012 • Stop atrocities in Uganda

  4. Who is josephkony? • Head of the guerrilla group LRA, Kony enjoyed support earlier but that changed when he began abducting children to become sex slaves and soldiers. In 2005,he was indicted for war crimes.

  5. Pros of KONY 2012 • It is successful in its first objective: Make Kony Famous. Kony is now almost a household name all over the world. • The effective use of social media had opened new gates for a global discussion. The world has never been so concerned about the plight of the Ugandans.

  6. Why did the video go viral? • The slick, controversial video played on human emotion. • It is personalized, emotionally intense and appealing. It pulls the right emotional strings–joy, dismay, shock. • Tactical calls-to-action prompted people to share it.

  7. Techniques used • Appeal to emotion - blatant depict of atrocities - a father-and-son story • Hollywood style • Personalise and idealise the campaign - use words like “define ourselves” and “ Shape History” - Advocate people, especially teenagers, to “make a change”

  8. Techniques used • An analogy: the film is very much similar to the movie V For Vendatta • Both used: - unified action, uniform and slogan - viral transmission of message • “nothing is more powerful than an idea whose time has come.”

  9. Criticisms of KONY 2012 • Over simplistic - Uganda’s situation is complex - killing of Joseph Kony may not be the solution • Does not solve the root problem • Kony not the main problem the people are facing • Food shortage, social needs etc. • Did not identify the priorities of the people correctly

  10. Criticisms of KONY 2012 • Inaccurate information provided - Konyhas not been in Uganda since 2005 - Current size of LRA: 100 plus - Uganda currently enjoys peace • Conspiracy theories - funds irregularities - the US's sights on oil in Uganda & Congo

  11. Criticisms of KONY 2012 • “slacktivism” • calls on people to take feel-good measures in support of a social cause  • Huge gap from Awareness to Action: - Cover the Night: does it really help? - Implementation: who will do it? - Sustainability: after the capture of Kony…

  12. Criticisms of KONY 2012 • “The Kony documentary is basically a huge awareness campaign,” Forbes magazine said. “As many have pointed out, awareness and social media alone will do very little to stop the atrocities in Africa.” • Seems to be celebrating Konyinstead of condemning Kony • Stance and tone of the video

  13. Video of escaped victim of KONY 2012 • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZCPXpF_RYA&feature=relmfu

  14. LRA’s response • http://rebelweb.me/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/LRA-Response-to-Kony-2012.pdf • Questions raised by response • What indeed is the truth of the US intervention in Central Africa? • What reality and facts stand behind the “KONY 2012” façade or masquerade?

  15. End results in KONY, Objectives met? • The goal of making Kony a household name has been achieved. Earlier viral movements were mainly local, but Kony2012 become a talking point worldwide, paving the way for more such movements • Will the atrocities be stopped and Kony captured? Time will tell, but likely not. • Increasing the SOL in Uganda? Likely not.

  16. Power of media, esp. social media • This experience demonstrates the growing power of the social media which is being increasingly mobilized in diverse parts of the world to aid movements of various kinds. It played a vital role in the Arab Spring, in the Iran Uprising, in various uprisings all over the world and now in mobilizing public opinion against an international criminal. The role of the social media is likely to continue to grow and to be used for more and more diverse objectives.

  17. Conslusion • With doubts about the movement's legitimacy, social media will keep throwing up conversations and information that influence people's stances. Good research is important before picking a side.

  18. Thinking questions • Why is the video so popular in the western world, but many Ugandans are protesting? What does this show? • What other implications will the media hold in the years to come? • Positive • Negative
