  1. If you had to explain the information about the element above what would you say? Reading the Element Squares

  2. The Element Square • Other items • State • Chemical Name • Group Name • Group # Symbol Atomic # Atomic Mass

  3. What does it mean? • Atomic Number • # of protons (P+) • # of electrons (e-) • (only in natural state) • Neon has 10 protons. Atomic #

  4. What does it mean? • Atomic Mass • Number of protons and neutrons in nucleus • Approximation • Ne = 20.18amu • Can’t have .18 of a subatomic particle • Calculation • Mass – atomic # = neutrons • 20 – 10 = 10 neutrons Atomic Mass

  5. What does it mean? • Chemical Symbol • Mostly from Latin names • Lead = Pb • Pb = Plumbum • English or German names too • Named after people or place of discovery • Rutherfordium = Rf • Californium = Cf • 1, 2, or 3 letters • 1st capitalized • 2nd lower case • 3rd lower case (temporary ) Symbol

  6. What does it mean? • Other items • State • Solid, liquid, gas • Chemical Name • Group Name (Families) • Alkaline Earth Metals • Noble Gases • Group # • 1-18 • # of valence electrons • Not for groups 3-12

  7. Now Give it a Try! • Periodic Table • Pgs. 112-113 • Choose 1 element from 3 t0 20. • Can’t be the same as anyone else at your table. • Copy the information from the book onto your element square (index card). • Gather other information about your element from the textbook. • Pgs. 120-124; 128-135 • Write that information onto the back of index card. • On purple paper, draw a model of your atom.
