  3. Controlling Factors (2) • Physical damage • Vulnerable to damage at all stages • Material degradation • Oxidation, UV, aggressive chemicals • Stress cracking ( mainly HDPE)

Regulatory Requirements • How long is the required design life? • Many applications, different countries • UK landfill requirements • No fixed period • Until the waste stabilises and is not a pollution hazard to environment • Hundreds, even thousands, of years • Long term durability of geomembranes critical
