  1. Extended Science Vocabulary of the Week3-18-2013 • Pyrophoric – • capable of igniting spontaneously in air • Although aluminum is a common structural metal, finely divided aluminum is pyrophoric. • Humectant – • a substance that absorbs or retains moisture, added to a product to keep it from drying out. • Glycerol is a humectant added to some food products to help retain their moistness.

  2. Extended Science Vocabulary of the Week3-25-2013 • Hydrolysis – • decomposition of a chemical compound by  reacting with water • The energy required to drive many cellular processes is supplied by the hydrolysis of ATP. • Anomaly – • a deviation from the average or norm; irregularity • In approximately 10% of patients, autism can be explained by a chromosomal anomaly.

  3. Extended Science Vocabulary of the Week4-8-2013 • Surfactant – • a substance that can reduce the surface tension of a liquid • Detergents are surfactants that help remove organic compounds from a substance by making them dissolve more readily in the water. • Amalgam – • a mixture or combination; an alloy of mercury with various metals used for dental fillings • Smog is an amalgam of smoke and fog.

  4. Extended Science Vocabulary of the Week4-15-2013 • Reagent – • a substance that, because of the reactions it causes, is used in analysis and synthesis. • Benedict’s solution is a reagent used to test for the presence of simple sugars. • Galvanize – • to coat a metal (especially iron or steel) with zinc. • Nails are galvanized to prevent the steel from rusting.
