  1. CLICK AND STUDY Study abroad

  2. Exercise 1 BEFORE YOU WATCH Would you like to be a study-abroad student? Why or why not? If you were considering studying abroad for post-secondary education, which country and/or university would you choose? What factors are important to you? Explain your choices. Besides the program of study itself, what are some of the issues you would need to plan for and solve as a study-abroad student? Are you interested in taking an international exam in English? If so, which one? Why do you think it might be good to have an English-language credential? What do you think about the costs of university education? Do you think university education should be subsidized? What are the pros and cons of student-paid tuition fees?

  3. WHILE YOU WATCH Exercise 2 Are these statements TRUE or FALSE? • Click and Study offers a choice of 100 universities in more than 10countries. • Click and Study can help you get a student loan. • Click and Study sends your personal statements to university teachers to get some feedback. • The tuition fee in Ireland is higher than in the UK. • Some foreign universities do not require any language certificates. • The purpose of the cover letter is to convince the admission board that you are a suitable candidate. • It doesn’t matter what grades you get in the Czech schools if you want to be accepted to a university abroad. • Click and study was started by two friends were having difficulties filling in university application forms.

  4. Exercise 3 Listen and fill in the gaps O.K. So my name is Dominik. I‘m 19 years old. We have launched a start-up which is called Click and Study. It is basically a website which provides the opportunity to apply to more than universities in more than countries. Then, we also offer help with, I don’t know, getting a student loan or some kind of a student . You get to know the people who are actually to the same university, you can talk to them, you can, I don’t know, rent an apartment with them, then get to know them. The biggest difference between them is obviously the tuition fee… So, if you decide to apply for university abroad, you should first of all think of the fact that most of the university are going to require a language certificate from you. So, I believe that as soon as possible, I think, you should pass some kind of a language certificates, such as Cambridge or Toefl. Then I would really focus on my own or your studies to get the best grades possible. … and then apply with a in which you should convince the admission board that you are a suitable choice for them or that you are the perfect choice for them. And if they decide to give you an offer, then they will give you other requirements which you have to place in your high school leaving exam. As I already mentioned, you can apply to many countries from our website. Moreover, we can also help you with the personal statement. You can send it to us and we will give you some kind of a feedback. So we started our company a year ago. The determining factor to actually do it was that me and my brother, we were like struggling with applications and with different application procedures which are in different countries. … and nowadays, we are working on different monetizations of the project and we would also like to launch a Facebook application and…

  5. AFTER YOU WATCH Exercise 4 Match the English expressions with their Czech equivalent

  6. Exercise 5 ROLE PLAY • Your task is to write a PERSONAL STATEMENT for an application to an undergraduate institution of study abroad. Develop three paragraphs that express why you are applying to the school, what program of study interests you; and why the experience will be beneficial for you. • Work in small groups of 3-4 students. Read your personal statement to the others and have each person in the group give you feedback what is good and what can be improved in your statement. Make necessary revisions to correct or improve the content and its presentation. • Select one person’s personal statement in the group to prepare a role play with. Your task is to create a face-to-face interview with an Admissions Review Board. The student whose statement you selected, is to appear before the Board to answer some questions on behalf of the university. Members of the group will take the position of different administrators who are interested in the student’s application and want to determine if the person will be accepted or not. Each group prepares and presents their role play to the rest of the groups.

  7. Exercise 5 GROUP DISCUSSION 4. Reflection and Debriefing: Which role plays were the strongest? Why? Did you notice any differences in the personal presentation styles for different kinds of programs and schools? What preparation do you need before a face-to-face interview as a prospective student? What questions do you have as a group about study abroad possibilities and programs? 5. As a whole group, identify the types of programs you are interested in studying (humanities, law, medical, business, etc.). What kinds of skills are needed for different kinds of programs? How well are you prepared for studying as an undergraduate student? Besides knowledge and skills in your subject areas, what other kinds of understanding do you need (i.e. self-care, organizational, communicational, self-motivation, teamwork, etc.) How can a company like ‘Click and Study’ help you as a prospective student wanting to study abroad?
