  1. Aim: Students will be able to identify major breakthroughs in the play. Do now: Take out a sheet of paper.

  2. Pop Quiz: 1) What did Keller give Annie when he first saw her in today’s reading? 2) Who said grace? Who thought the grace was strange? 3) Who did James say was right and who did James say was wrong? What was so special about this? 4) What word did Helen say verbally? What did the narrator call this? 5) Annie’s last words to Helen in the play are very similar to the words that ________ says to Annie.

  3. A Question to Ponder…. • What is a breakthrough moment?

  4. A Breakthrough Moment…. • Is a moment that allows for great change to occur! • Ex) Winning the lottery or graduating college can both be breakthrough moments.

  5. Connection to the Story… • Did you see any breakthrough moments in the reading assigned for today?

  6. Helen has a breakthrough moment! • Helen speaks verbally for the first time in a long time! • Not only does she learn to spell many new words like “pump”, “ground”, and “step”, but she says “Wah Wah,” (p.108) something she hasn’t said in years!

  7. James and Arthur have a breakthrough moment! • Throughout the play, Arthur doesn’t respect James. • Arthur tries to chase after Annie, who is trying to catch Helen, but James tells him to “let her go” (p.107). • James tells Arthur that he is wrong and that Arthur will drive away Annie over his dead chair (p.107)

  8. James and Arthur have a breakthrough moment! • Arthur hears this and is shocked that James would step up to him. • Arthur looks James in the eye, sees that he is serious, and politely asks James to sit down. • Arthur doesn’t dare try going after Annie after this. • James gained Arthur’s respect with this act. James becomes a man in Arthur’s eyes in this moment.

Annie and Kate have a breakthrough moment! • There has always been a power struggle between Annie and Kate in the play where Helen is concerned. • Kate, after having her first verbal communication with Helen ever (another breakthrough moment) is so much in awe and filled with so much gratitude towards Annie, relinquishes Helen and allows her to be with Annie (p.111).

  10. A Question to Ponder…. • Which of the breakthrough moments we mentioned do you think was the most profound? Why?

  11. A Question to Ponder…. • What was so special about the last words Annie said?

  12. Annie said…. • The same words boy’s voice (her brother Jimmie) always says to her. • These are the words Annie used to say to Jimmie. • Annie is making the same promise to Helen that she made to Jimmie.

  13. Question to Ponder…. • Do you think she will be able to keep it? Why or why not?

  14. Homework: • Summarize the book: 1) In a paragraph. 2) In a sentence. 3) In a word. **) Bring in the Bronx zoo permission slip!

  15. In Conclusion…. • Breakthrough moments are those moments that allow for great change to occur. • There were several breakthrough moments in these last few pages. • Breakthrough moments can last a lifetime. Will these breakthrough moments last nearly as long?
