  1. Fundamental Counting Principle Probability

  2. Tree Diagrams (remember how to draw these?) • You have a photo that you want to mat and frame. You can choose from a blue, purple, red, or green mat and a metal or wood frame. Describe all of the ways you could frame this photo with one mat and one frame. • Draw a tree diagram to show all of the possible options. • How many different ways can you frame the photo with one mat & one frame? 8 different ways

  3. Is there an easier way? • How can we tell how many options there are without drawing a tree diagram? • Choices!!! • How many choices are there for the mat? • 4 • How many choices are there for the frame? • 2 • Multiply: 2(4) • There are 8 choices.

  4. The Fundamental Counting Principle tells you only the number of outcomes in some experiments, not what the outcomes are. A tree diagram is a way to show all of the possible outcomes.

  5. Use the Fundamental Counting Principle… The Aprende Café has a menu of tasty lunch choices. You have the choice of a main entrée, fruit, and drink. For your entrée, you can pick pizza, a sub sandwich, or chicken nuggets. For your fruit you can pick from a banana, apple, orange, or grapes. For your drink you can choose from milk or apple juice. How many different lunch combinations are there? How many entrées? How many fruits? How many drinks? 3(4)(2) = There are 24 different lunch combinations. 3 4 2 24

  6. Use the Fundamental Counting Principle… License plates are being produced that have a single letter followed by three digits. All license plates are equally likely. Find the number of possible license plates. second digit letter first digit third digit 10 choices 10 choices 10 choices 26 choices 26  10  10  10 = 26,000
