Epithets in Epics • Homer uses epithets as formulas to characterize places and people. • For example, when Penelope is referred to as “faithful Penelope,” we are instantly reminded of her outstanding character trait. • Additionally, epithets help the poet maintain the meter (the beat or flow) of the epic.

  6. Turn in the textbook to page 953. • Read “A Famous Epithet Mystery” • Complete 1,2, and 3 from the yellow box labeled “Try it Out” and then make up your own epithets. • Make sure your name is on your sheet. Hand it in. • Then begin working on the vocabulary: There are ten “Words to Own” for part one of Homer’s Odyssey.
