  1. UP CLOSE AND CLASSICAL

  2. ORIGIN • Began Up Close and Classical Series as an educational program to address the requests from members for more music education opportunities. A dual goal was to build a wider audience for our fabulous orchestra. A similar program begun in our Junior Group was a favorite of our members, and for those of us who had graduated to “the Big League” we were looking for a way to continue these intimate evenings with great musicians.

  3. GUEST ARTISTS WERE BOOKED With assistance from our Artist Administrator,Victor Marshall, guest artists willing to speak to our Up Close and Classical guests were located and booked. These events proved to be very popular so we began including them in our Parties of Note brochure.

  4. VENUES Next, private homes and/or venues were secured to host the events.

  5. DINNER IS ADDED What better than good food, a gracious home, and the chance to Q&A with the artist you will hear at the Symphony that weekend?

  6. WHO LIKES TO COOK? Several of the original committee members from the Junior Group had been cooking together for years so sharing our love for great cuisine and our orchestra seemed a perfect match! Cooking for the DSO for 25 years!

  7. WE DO!!!!! Up Close is one of the most popular committees in the DSOL. As everyone knows, the party is really in the kitchen!

  8. COORDINATING THE FOOD One League member is needed to plan and coordinate all the food for these events All those preparing food also agree to help serve it at the event

  9. HOW MANY CAN COME? Attendance was limited by the number of attendees the host home could comfortably accommodate so we were fairly sure the events would sell out quickly. We were right. In the beginning, only one Up Close and Classical event was scheduled. We typically hold 2 dinner a year, one Fall, one Spring, serving 40-50 guests.

  10. COSTS Typically, the cooks cover the costs of preparing their dish and do not pay the fee to attend. We do have costs in the valet parking and the housekeeper we use to help us wash dishes. • To ensure League members had priority, they were given the opportunity to sign up prior to our offering tickets to non-League members. • In the hope of enticing non-League members wishing to attend these events to join the League, League members paid significantly less for Up Close and Classical tickets than did non-members. It didn’t take long for non-members to figure out it the benefit of joining the League so they would qualify for the lower ticket prices!

  11. TURNING PATRONS INTO MEMBERS Our challenge then became to ensure these patrons enjoyed their Up Close experience so they would choose to return as League members in subsequent years.

  12. FROM EDUCATIONAL TO SERVICE While this project originally arose from the desire for more music education opportunities among our members, as it has evolved, it has become an excellent service opportunity the members as well. &

  13. MEASURING SUCCESS A huge part of the success of these Up Close and Classical evenings has been the superb food provided by our volunteers chefs. Word of their exceptional culinary creations spread, not just among League members but among others as well, allowing us to continue to raise our prices yet sell out our events. As a result, the League has also been able to realize some profit from our most recent events. • Party 4   • Up Close and Classical Underwriting  983.33 • Up Close and Classical Checks 1,185.00 • Up Close and Classical Credit 1,180.00 • Income Total 3,550.00    • Party 4 - Expense    Catering 0  Cleaning Service 100.00 Entertainment/Musicians 0  Hostess Gifts 75.00 Photographer 150.00  Rentals 200.00  Servers 0 Valet 200.00 Wine 360.00 Total Expense  1,085.00    Net Profit Party 4 2,465.00
