  1. Make Essex a Conflict-Free Campus

  2. TEDtalks- Bandi Mbubi: Demand a fair trade cell phone

  3. Companies and conflict minerals

  4. Congo Calling Congo Calling offers us all a means of making a difference: we can all demand conflict free technology. Our work is unique! • We inspire consumers to demand that tech companies develop conflict-mineral free products, and to commit to buying them once they are available • We influence technology companies to abide by the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas • We lobby for the adoption and implementation of commercial, political and legal frameworks to promote ethical mining practices in the DRC • And we link all of these groups with the voices of Congolese people both in the DRC and in the Diaspora

  5. The Exeter University Campaign • “We want universities across the world to sign into their procurement legislation a pledge, that they acknowledge this conflict in the Congo, and our role in it, and their responsibility to pressure and question their suppliers and, when time comes, to buy conflict free electronics.”

  6. So, what can we do? • The good news is, because we have a role in causing this conflict, we can play a role in ending it.  • We have huge power as consumers, we are the ones who buy these products so we have a voice technology companies listen to.  • Now imagine the power a university has, an organisation that spends millions of pounds on technology. Now imagine universities across the world standing up and saying enough. Pressuring technology companies to track their supply chains and create 'conflict free' electronics.

  7. What can we do at Essex?

  8. Build a cross-society campaign to get a conflict-free campus into the SU’s constitution-talk to your friends, family, flat mates, and anyone you know! Raise a motion at the next SRF(Student Representative Forum) to pass the conflict-free campus into the constitution Eventual Goal: Lobby the university and the VC to create a truly conflict-free campus at Essex.
