  1. Horizontal Projectiles

  2. What is a horizontal projectile? • Follows a parabolic pathto the ground • Predictable unknowns: • Initial speed of the projectile • Initial height of the projectile • Time of flight • Range of the projectile • Launched with a horizontal velocity from an elevated position

  3. Horizontal Projectiles Analysis • A horizontal projectile is moving in two dimensions - both horizontally and vertically • Horizontal and vertical components of motion are independent of each other • Two distinctly separate sets of equations are needed: • One for the horizontal motion • One for the vertical motion

  4. Horizontal Motion Equations • Horizontal motion: constant velocity • vix = vfx = vx • ax = 0 m/s2

  5. Vertical Motion Equations • Vertical motion: constant acceleration • viy = 0 m/s • ay = -10 m/s2 (or –9.81 m/s2)

  6. HINTS for Correct Solution • Make a sketch of the situation • List the givens in a table with horizontal information on one side and vertical information on the other side • Identify the unknown quantity to solve for • Use either a horizontal or vertical equation to solve for the time of flight • With the time of flight now known, use one of the other equations to solve for the unknown

  7. Example A motorcycle drives off a 19.6 m high cliff. What horizontal speed must the motorcycle have to safely land in the center of the landing zone 48 m away?
