  3. Objectives • Students will… • Identify characteristics of mollusks • Compare the similarities and differences between an open and a closed circulatory system

  4. Tapeworms • Type of parasitic flatworm • To survive, it lives in the intestines of its host (including humans!) • Since it does not have a digestive system, it absorbs nutrients from digested material in the host’s intestine. • How do tapeworms get into humans? • Tapeworm length activity

Mollusks (Conchs, Scallops, Snails, Octopus, Mussels) Characteristics of Mollusks • Gills for water dwelling and lungs for land dwelling • Radula- scratchy tongue like organ that has rows of fine, teeth-like projections that are used to scrape off small bits of food. • Mantle- a thin layer of tissue that covers the mollusk’s soft body • Shell for protection • Foot is used for moving or for anchoring the animal • Open circulatory system-do not have vessels to contain their blood. Blood washes over organs instead.

Cephalopods • Most complex type of mollusks (Nautilus, Octopus, Squid, Cuttlefish) • Internal plate instead of shell • Well-developed head and a “foot” that is divided into tentacles with strong suckers • Closed circulatory system-in which blood is carried through blood vessels instead of surrounding organs Adapted for quick movement

Segmented Worms • Other name: Annelids • Include: earthworms, leeches and marine worms • Four Characteristics • 1) Bodies are made of segments or rings • 2) Coelom or internal body cavity (separates the internal organs from body wall)\ • 3) Closed circulatory system • 4) Complete digestive system with 2 body openings (pg. 509)
