Vision & Mission • Vision • Iziko Museums of Cape Town are African museums of excellence that empower and inspire all people to celebrate our diverse heritage. • Mission • To manage and promote Iziko’s unique combination of South Africa’s heritage collections, sites and services for the benefit of present and future generations.

Strategic Goals of Iziko • Drive the transformation process according to national guidelines • Achieve service excellence through management and development of human resources • Build, care for and interpret the collections and sites of Iziko • Improve and broaden accessibility to Iziko sites and collections • Unlock the educational potential of Iziko, and promote and innovatively showcase our arts, culture and natural history • Ensure financial viability for Iziko

  6. PERFORMANCE INFORMATION, circa 2006/2007 • Strategic Goal 1: Drive the transformation process according to national guidelines • Compliance with PFMA regulations • Compliance with labour and heritage legislation • Successful partnership projects

  7. Building Strategic Partnerships • Signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Freedom Park Trust • The Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism on a visit to Iziko SA Museum

  8. Strategic Goal 2: Achieve service excellence through management and development of human resources • 2nd phase of realigned structure has almost finalised

Strategic Goal 3: Build, care for and interpret the collections and sites of Iziko • 3 contributions of the CEO appeared in academic publications • 8 contributions of professionals in the Art Collections department appeared academic publications • 25 scientific papers were produced by scientists in the Natural History Collections department • 1 contribution by Sarah Wurtz of the Social History Collections department appeared in a scientific journal • 2nd volume of Iziko’s African Natural History Journal appeared.

The Iziko access project for people with disabilities • The oldest historical buildings of Cape Town involved in the project: • William Fehr Collection & Good Hope Gallery block at Castle of Good Hope • The city’s old Burgherwacht & Town House of the 1750s on Green Market Square, exhibiting the Michaelis Collection • Rust-en-Vreugd townhouse of the 1770s • Old Slave Lodge of the 1810s • Koopmans-De Wet House of the early 1800s • Bo-Kaap Museum of the early 1800s • National Gallery of the 1930s

Expected outcomes of Project • Michaelis Collection: new toilets, hand-rail and lift proposed and approved • National Gallery: lift to new library area approved • Rust-en-Vreugd: new lift and toilet facility approved • Slave Lodge: new lifts and toilet facilities approved • Koopmans de Wet House: new lift and toilet facilities approved • Bo-Kaap Museum: new ramp approved • William Fehr Collection: initial proposals rejected; further proposals rejected by respected architectural consultant; meeting with Castle authorities to take place to resolve impasse

Current status of project • Final drawings are being prepared by the architects for the buildings which have approved disabled access plans • Tender documents will be prepared for advertisement in early 2008 • The authorities responsible for the Castle will have to decide on the appropriate way forward with regard to disabled access to this historic building

  17. In 2006/7 Iziko Education and Public Programmes attracted over 198 000 visitors

  20. In addition to the acclaimed ‘Picasso and Africa’, Iziko hosted 33 new exhibitions during 2006/07 • Hand of Fatima Exhibition at the Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum • Santu Mofokeng exhibition at Iziko SA National Gallery

Strategic Goal 6: Ensure financial viability for Iziko • Unqualified Audit Report for for the last 4 years, 2003 – 2007 • No matter of emphasis in Annual Report 2006/07 • Responses to other matters and other reporting responsibilities: • Matters of Governance: Annual Internal Audit Plan • Revisions being undertaken • Matters of Governance: Value for money matters • Policies to guide processes of substance and travel claims, advances, overtime, housing allowances and staff terminations are being put in place • Other reporting responsibilities: Performance information • The relationship of Iziko Natural History research and collections with Department of Science and Technology to be addressed at national government level
