  3. Strategy #1: Surround yourself with good vocabulary • Talk to intelligent people – in English! • Read the newspaper • When you encounter words you don’t know, write them down, then look them up or ask a teacher • Do crossword puzzles and play word games

  4. Strategy #2: Keep a vocabulary notebook • Buy a small notebook that easily fits in your bag • Alphabetize your new words so that you can find them again easily

  5. Strategy #3: Use mnemonic devices and visual clues • A mnemonic device is a funny saying or catchy phrase that will help you remember something

  12. Strategy #4: Flashcards – 10 minutes a day FRONT: • Write a sentence using the word. Write the word in CAPITALS and underlined. BACK: • Write the definition of the word • In parenthesis (…) write the definition of any roots, prefixes, or suffixes • In the bottom right corner, write the first letter of the word

  13. Ways to practice with flashcards • Your friend reads a word, then you create a new sentence using that word • Your friend reads you a word, then you give its roots and as many words as you can that share this root • Your friend reads the definition from the back of the card and tells you the first letter of the word. You figure out the word • Your friend reads the word, and you work together to create a funny mnemonic device • Your friend reads the sentence, then you say the definition
