Planning of the study case related to the diffuse contamination by pesticides

The study case was divided in different phases:

Selection of the case study area

Identification of priority pesticides in the case study area

Identification of specific study sites

Planning and execution of a surveillance monitoring for surface and groundwaters

Proposals for an action plan

Selection of the study area

  • Characteristics of the area
  • prevailing crops: 90 % cereals, 10% wineyards
  • mean size of farms: 1300 ha
  • sales’ data: available on district level in electronic form
  • data of use: available from farms in paper form

Žitný Ostrov

Identification of priority pesticides in the study area

IP = V+(FA*U)*D

IP = Priority index APAT-ARPA-APPA pesticides

V = Score by sales data

FA = Score by MacKay distribution in water

environment

U = Use factor

D = Degradation factor

Selection of dangerous substances

on the basis of sales data, use and environmental behaviour through the use of indexes of priority (IP and I_EXP)

I_EXP = 1.37 * (log(EEXV) + 1.301)

Derived from Combined Monitoring based and modelling based Priority Setting Scheme (COMMPS)

EEXV= Emission = (sale * Distribution * Degradation)

Selection of the specific study sites

Area A: the territory worked by the farm cooperative of Dunajska Lužna

Area B: the territory in the triangle between Dunajska Streda (northern end), Gabčikovo (southern end) and Šamorin (south-western end).

A first monitoring campaign on surface and groundwater was carried out in July 2004
