Original MMUCC Crash Data Elements (1998) • Eighteen Collected Data Elements • Crash date & time, location, city and county, first harmful event information, light & weather conditions, reporting agency information, work zone and school bus related. • Eight Derived Data Elements • Crash severity, day of the week and number of: vehicles, motorists, non-motorists, fatalities & injuries.

  3. 2nd Edition MMUCC Crash Data Elements (2003) • Nineteen Collected Data Elements • Crash date & time, location, city and county, first harmful event information, light & weather conditions, reporting agency information, type of intersection, relation to junction, work zone and school bus related. • Nine Derived Data Elements • Crash severity, day of the week alcohol/drug involvement and number of: vehicles, motorists, non-motorists, fatalities & injuries.

What use is the Right Data? • Identify & prioritize highway and traffic safety problem areas • Evaluate the effectiveness of laws and policies designed to save lives • Initiate new laws and policies designed to save lives and prevent injuries • Support the development and execution of safety countermeasures

What Use Is Common Data? • Many state’s data may provide too few cases alone • Multi-state data is often needed to evaluate different safety environments. • Multi-state data can point to regional or nation-wide problems • Multi-state data can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of different solutions
